Intel Chipset Software for Older Chipsets

Should older versions of Intel's Chipset Software be used on motherboards with older Intel chipsets such as the 850? I've noticed that older chipsets aren't in the list in the Release Notes of newer chipset software such as version 8.0.
 
Makes sense. The initial release configuration usually does not change anyway and the same will be included in the later versions which target newer chipsets.
