I'm building a new computer for the first time, so forgive me if this is a beginner's question...

I've purchased an Asus P4P800 Deluxe mobo (Intel 865PE chipset) and I am planning to install Windows XP Pro. Do I need to install the Intel chipset software (INF files) before I install the OS (or immediately after)? The mobo manual does not mention this step at all, but from looking at the Intel website it appears it is required. Any clarification would be greatly appreciated

I don't think you can install the INF before installing the OS, but I try to keep an open mind :D

Here's Intel's recommended routine for you:

Is there a proper order for installing the operating system, service packs and drivers on the 8INXP?Here is the routine that Intel strongly suggests for Intel-based motherboards:
  1. Fresh Operating System Installation
  2. Latest Service Pack or Patch
  3. Intel® Chipset Software Installation Utility (INF Utility)
  4. All other device drivers
  5. Intel® Application Accelerator if needed
  6. Microsoft* DirectX* 8.0 or higher
