I am looking at the dells now.. which one would u choose?? Is the centrino really much faster than what the 'speed' is rated at and how is that possible?

I am looking at either the 5150 deal right now.. or going with one of the 500m, 600m. i intend to use it for business aplications, sql server, and some light word processing, gaming, and other stuff.

thoughts? Thanks in advaance

pentium-m should overall be better, because of what you want to use it for.

btw, im new, just wanted to say hello.

Hello - welcome! Thanks for the response.. well, I'm just looking at the most bang for the buck and cost. I'm also trying to imagine how heavy 7.9 lbs really is? I have the toshiba tecra 8100 right now.. and it's not that much.

If I end up going with the 5150, then I would probably need to change the memory as well.. to 512.. but it comes w/ 256. I'll most likely end up taking the $100 rebate, buy the additional memory from crucial.. but not sure if this laptop has 2 or 3 memory slots. If it only has 2, then I would have to pay another $50 to get 1 stick from dell thatw ould be 256mb.

I think all the dells are 2 slots.

I'm running a 600m @ 1.4ghz w/ 640mb ram and 64mb video. Runs sweet. Cool, Quiet, Powerful, and the battery life is approx 3.5 hrs doing light stuff like web browsing. I have also played Neverwinter Nights and Morrowind for about 2 hours once or twice before the battery warning came on (forgot to plug it in).

the rule of thumb that I heard awhile back is multiply centrino ghz by 1.5 to get the approx P4 speed.

if you are planning on using it for mobility, I would definately go centrino/lighter, desktop replacement.... well I would still go centrino/lighter... it IS a laptop after all 🙂

600m is a good centrino notebook. dell also has a new centrino notebook thats wide-screen (inspiron 8600). of course it costs more, but you probably want to check that out.
laptops have 2 ram slots, meaning you would remove one 128 mb dimm and put in a crucial one. dell memory is really overpriced, i wouldnt get ram from them.

the 5150 would be the best pentium-4-m notebook for dell, but its best used for intense gaming and multimedia.

So are you saying that the p4m is called that because it is a Mobile Pentium 4? But this is not a centrino, but still really fast right? Is the p4 3ghz the fastest CPU out there now for laptops?

technically yes, right now it is, but soon a new pentium-m will come out which is codenamed "dothan." The current pentium-m was meant to replace the pentium-4-m, but since they bumped up the speed to 3.06ghz, its not happening. Dothan should beat every mobile processor currently out there right now. too bad its coming out in 2004. they say its coming out in the first quarter, but im not sure.

edit: first quarter meaning january, around that time.

The 3 ghz P4 will be faster then the centrino, but the centrino will run cooler and use less power.

Will your new laptop be on the desk most of the time, or will you be traveling with it? That should dictate which you get.

Shouldn't it be more then that? A pint of water is a pound, and a gallon is 8 pints. I would have thought that milk would weigh more then water.

I will be traveling with the laptop, but it will sit on the desk once I get into the office.

The 5150 is 1.83 inches thick. Keep that in mind.

SEE the machine before purchasing it.

1100, 5100 and 5100 have the same basic dimensions btw... (and an ugly blue colour 😛)

I was right about it being closer to 10 Lbs than 7. 8.62 is 1.38Lbs off from 10 but 1.62 off from 7. I was wondering does reem (500 sheets) of 20 Lb paper weigh 20 Lbs, because it doesn't seem like it.

The 5150 would run significantly fatser than the M chip. If the laptop is going to go in a carrier to work then sit on a desk all day, the 5150 would definately be my choice. Battery is not a consideration here at all. Depending on who you ask the 5150 gets between 4.5 and 5 hours playing a DVD. Now if portability were a bigger concern, then you might think a little harder on this one, but it doesn't sound like that's an issue. Go with the 5150.

i woulder rather just wait for the new pentium-m to come out. 2 mb cache. a 2ghz dothan processor could probably be faster than p-4-m 3ghz.
