I can get this for my dad... He wanted a HTPC for a long time now... Do you think this CPU will be good enough to run movies on a big screen TV? OC'd off course.

No more cache than the single core Conroe-L Celerons. :frown:

Probably OC like crazy, about 100% at 8x, or the same as the Conroe-L Celeron 4xx chips and the Pentium E21x0 series.

Hope for the best, but they are likely to hit same wall around 400 Mhz +/- 10 bus speeds. A rare Cel 420/430/44 or Pentium E21x0 chip goes higher, even 445 fsb, but some are worse.

8x multiplier Pentium E2140 or Celeron 420 chips I've tested are stable at 3120 (391 fsb wall at any vcore), 3208 (401), and 3280 (413 fsb).

When 9x or 10x multiplier models arrive we are more likely to get all the core has to offer (have 3500 MHz+ from a 10x Cel 440).

If you use the graphic card with PureVideo/AVIVO, there shouldn't be any problem. I use stock E2140 (1.6GHz, 1MB L2) with 7150 onboard video for HTPC, and it plays 720p H.264 video with CPU load under 40%. Of course, I had to play around with codec and media player a bit as not all the codecs/programs support PureVideo. But once everything is figured out, it should play any movies without problem.

Oh, btw, this is about Hi-Def movies, like those with 1280x768 resolution and 60 fps. If you are running usual Divx movies or DVD movies, no it shouldn't be a problem running anything. But if you are into Hi-Def movies (Including HD-DVD/Blu-ray), you definately need a help of video card. Even Core 2 Quad needs help

Dang, wish this had been out @ 2 weeks ago.

I briefly considered the E21x0 series for my folks ... but jumped on one of the Phenom 9500/cheapo ECS motherboard deals. Could resist a quad core that CPU+Motherboard+Ram cost less then the Intel Q6600.

Had I seen this first though ... i wold have gone a different route and saved some $$.

Compare to the E2140 at Microcenter for $60... for the extra L2 cache I'd get the E2140. But this chip isn't too bad I guess, for those thinking of getting a Celeron 440 or something.

No, it's $53 and the E2140 is $60. Not exactly a world of difference, heh?

Fry's keep on putting up the Celeron 430 with a cheap ECS motherboard for $59, perhaps soon they'll use this cpu instead of the Celeron 430. That would be interesting.

e2140 is 70 now. 60 was holiday sales price. holidays over.
zzf has it for i think 71-72 free shipping. cheapest place i've found.

would like to see some comparison benches though.

Ive got this chip... upgrading to a C2D e6xxx now for gaming reasons but it plays perfect video at 720p on vista with my 2gb ddr and 8600gts. I even pull 80+ fps in CS Source, TF2, Eve online and other games...

I think I will get about 20fps more though with more l2 cache.
