Intel C2D stock HSF doesn't fit!

Hi,

Just spent about 2 hours trying to get the stock HSF of my Intel E8500 to attach to my motherboard (Asus P5Q) -- it's literally impossible to do without breaking something. It's as if the legs are too short.

Anyway, it means I might need to purchase another HSF. Can someone recommend a good, quiet HSF that isn't a billion $s? I will not be overclocking.

TIA.

I had exactly the same problem when I was trying to mount the BigTyp VX120. Its was a PITA and I gave up in the end because I didn't want to break anything (the amount of pressure I was applying to the MB and push pins was getting ridiculous).

I did exactly what Gillbot recommended in his post - buy the bolt through kit or buy a new HSF with the kit included. Believe me it is such a suprerior mounting method to those stupid bloody crap plastic push pins most HSF companies (inc. Intel) seem to use.

Yeah I just had another go at it (with another person helping!), and no luck. I just hope I haven't f*cked something up already.

Unfortunately it seems I may not be able to get that bolt-thru-kit where I live (South Africa).

Appreciate the suggestion though.

Any recommended HSFs out there?

The Thermalright bolt through kit is identical to the Sidewinder kit and easider to find outside the US.

I couldn't find an online retailer in South Africa, so your best bet is to find somewhere which will ship internationally.

All you need to use from the kit is the backplate and 4 sprung bolts.

In a pinch you can use just about any thin bolt with nut. Just try to screw it down evenly.

If you are unable to get the stock push pin HSF installed pretty much right away, then STOP and take a breather. Then, examine the tips of the pins to make sure they aren't bent outwards. If they are bent, then there is NO getting it installed. You can fix them by squeezing the two sides together and making sure they go into the motherboard hole. For the stock push pins, the only time I ever really had a problem was when one pin wasn't through all the way. It really helps if the motherboard is not in the case. Also, the motherboard will flex a bit both during and stay flexed after installation. That can't be helped.

If you just want to buy a replacement unit and you aren't overclocking, then just about any cheap HSF will work.

@daw123

The problem with shipping internationally is that (unless you use the really slow option which is about 3 weeks I think), it costs like two and a half times more than the product itself, just in shipping charges. For that amount of money, I may as well just get an after-market HSF.

@Zap

The white/clear part goes through the motherboard, but the black pin doesn't push through far enough to lock the white/clear part in place. I've tried with the motherboard in, as well as out of the case. It's ridiculous that the motherboard should flex/warp due to the HSF.

Another problem I've seen people have with the Intel stock HS unit is turning the black "knob" on the top the wrong way.

And, btw, the stock Intel hs/fan unit does indeed fit an ASUS P5-anything motherboard.....got a P5Q-EM in my "secondary" computer using a stock Intel hs/fan, and it snapped right in. Built more than one with ASUS P5E/Q/B/N---never had one problem snapping in an Intel hs. Me suspects user error.

Amazingly, we were eventually able to get it in ... using a toilet roll to support the underside!

It certainly didn't just 'snap right in'.

Thanks everyone.
