Intel C2D E6400/ECS P4M800Pro-M v2 Mobo $219 OR AMD 3800+/ECS KN1 Lite $119

New Fry's B&M ad in Houston:

Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E6400 ECS P4M800Pro-M v2 Mobo for $219
I believe thisis the retail boxed processor.
ZZF has processor alone for $219, so basically free motherboard for paying tax.

I am looking to build a C2D system, but have been unable to decide on a mobo. I was thinking about going ahead and biting on this and setting up the system with the qausi free mobo in the interim til i choose my official motherboard. thoughts? is this worth it? or do you think C2D prices will drop more in the near future...

OR

Amd Athlon 64 3800+ & ECS KN1 Lite Mobo for $119

Keep in mind that the 3800+ is a single-core processor, not the same animal as the X2 variant.
Also define near. Black Friday is only a month and half away and I'm sure on BF there's going to be some insane CPU/mobo combo deal at Frys.

They seem like decent deals to me. Note that the ZZF E6400 processor is retail and the Fry's combo appears to include an OEM processor. But even so, the motherboard runs about $50 at most etailers, so this could be the basis of a fairly low budget system which, excluding gaming due to AGP, outperforms the fastest and most expensive rigs of just six months ago.

Seattle Fry's also has the same deals. The picture is of the C2D logo, so this is def OEM, not Retail box. (if the pic shows the retail box, that's what you get! 🙂)

i called (twice) spoke to two (diff) guys in Components and they told me that the deal includes retail boxed processor and retail boxed mobo....

Went to Fry's (Seattle, actually Renton) on Tuesday because a friend wanted to build a computer. We looked at all the different mb/cpu combo. The sales guy assured us that all the cpu in the ad are retail unless it explicitly say OEM on it. My friend ended up just going for the E6400/GigabyteDS3 combo despite the fact you get a better price online.

I'm pretty NEWB to Overclocking but I'm pretty tempted to with the potential of the new C2Duos.

A few people on newegg said that they were ablet to OC with the POS ECS board that Frys is throwing in the deal. What do you guys think... get a free mobo or drop another $200+ for Asus/Intel board with a good overclocking history?

It all really depends if you're willing to pull your system apart and re-install everything again. That in itself is a PITA for most people.

But then again, you're getting a free motherboard now. Who knows, in the future DFI or Abit may come out with a C2D motherboard that would put to shame any of the existing ones out now.

Yea... maybe I'll just run it at standard clock speed until I can get kickass mobo in a few months. Besides... a 2.13ghz C2D will kill my Single Core 2.66 any day of the week AND I can still use all my old hardware (DDR1 Ram, X800XT-PE AGP)...

does anyone know if this mobo still suppords IDE hard drives?

Yes, it does support IDE. http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWeb/Products/P...&DetailID=673&DetailName=Specification

I think this is a great deal. Sure, the motherboard only has AGP, but sometime next year PCI-e 2.0 slots will be available on motherboards so lots of people who are spending $150 to $250 on fancy boards now will still need to upgrade if they want a top of the line video card. Why spend more than you have to if you just want a faster CPU for another 6 months to a year?

Another plus is that you can use your 20 pin power supply with this board.

Basically you can upgrade your performance in a massive way with just this combo.

Just picked it up... both components are retail and sealed.

I was looking in the motherboard section, I kid you not, I saw at least 20 of the exact same motherboards... opened-box returns.

I'm almost scared to open my ECS mobo

I just bought this board with the 6300 combo. So far, it seems solid. I suspect a lot of people are returning it because it doesn't overclock worth a damn.
