I haven't been keeping track lately (shame on me) and it's getting close to upgrade time..........

If I buy an Intel P35/X38 mb, is there a "newer" Intel cpu that's currently available today that is not supported without first having to upgrade the bios? Or can you use any Intel cpu in either of them?

Thank ya' kindly ;)

Depending on the mobo, you may have to flash the bios to get the 45nm processors to work. In the abit IP35-PRO, for example, you need v16 to use Wolfdale or Yorkfield processors.

You'll have to go to Intel's website and check the bios version of the board you're interested in. Those chipsets are older now, and some wolfdale .45 nm cpus won't post in them without a bios flash. Check newegg for a p45 board if you want to avoid a bios flash, or get a cheap celeron 775 cpu and use it for the flash. The 7xxx, 8xxx, and 9xxx are the .45 nm cpus that may not work.

I'd first look at Intel's website to ensure the wanted cpu is compatible with the wanted motherboard....that is, there is a BIOS that does allow the board to function with the cpu.

Then, try to find a retailer that will ensure you get the latest revision of the board.....you don't want a board produced a year ago but one since the proper BIOS was released. That way you're pretty assured the recent build of the board should have the latest BIOS already flashed on it.

Some of the smaller etailers will even, for a small fee, ensure the board is flashed with the proper BIOS for you before shipping it off to you......all you have to do is ask. I'd gravitate towards etailers like TankGuys and the like as these sellers, being small and very enthusiast oriented, do provide services like this that large sellers, like Newegg, don't.

Looks like it's going to be a P45.
I don't think the Intel board has been released yet though. I checked NewEgg and 2 other big etailers with no luck.

EDIT: Just got done chatting with NewEgg. There's no arrival date on the P45. They just said to keep checking back to see if it's available.

not true, on an IP35 Pro they work on 14 just that the reported temps are wrong.
