That Pentium M will smack an Atom silly in most things Though an Atom usually comes with an IGP that can accelerate Flash 10.1 videos so there are things an Atom equipped "laptop" may provide a better experience with... A Pentium M at 2.2GHz may have problems with HD Flash videos (and it most certainly is paired with an IGP not supported for Flash 10.1 acceleration) - that's just a guess though.
just to clarify, op, you're aware that the pentium m was the precursor to the core duo and, thus, the core 2 duo, right? if you're talking about the pentium m why not talk about the core 2 solo instead?
I think we need more information from the OP to know what his purposes are and what he's comparing. You can't just drop one CPU or another into a laptop. We need full specs, and faster for WHAT.
That said, I recall the Pentium Ms were about 50% faster clock-for-clock than Atom 230s (i.e. Atom at 1.6ghz was equivalent to Pentium M at 800mhz). This was a couple years ago though, when the first wave of netbooks was first proliferating.
Great! Want to thank everyone for their input. I know that Atom is all over the place in the mobile market, but since I haven't seen any Pentium M's in a while I wasn't sure how they stack up to each other.
I'm looking at a small form factor pc and unfortunately core 2 duo isn't a option.
