I see this application on the mobo CD from the past few Intel mobos I've had. But, I've never installed it. Is it needed??

Well, I've been to a few other forums and they have said it degraged performance. Also, has issues with some other software.

At DSL reports, many people have reported terrible results:

I installed the application accelerator. 1300 mhz P4, 850 Chipset.

Before
Read 40
Write 40

After
Read 21
Write 31

Guess who's uninstalling the intel application accelerator.

Another:

**Before v2.3 install my time was around 3 hrs 50 min. per work unit.

**After install, and I gave it 24 hours to crunch, my times averaged 4 hrs 8 min. per WU.

I have uninstalled this new software.

Another:

Raptor test before installing

read 21
write 25

After installing

read 13
write 24

After uninstalling
read 18
write 23

Now that really bites, I'm slower than I started!

Maybe back then it didn't work right. But it is up to version 2.3.

I've got lots of P3/PC100/i810 systems, lots of Cel2/PC100/i810 systems and one P4/RDRAM/i850 system at work. I ran exhaustive virus scans of the hard drive (and timed them, of course) before and after installing IAA, to see what effect it had on these, and it really made no appreciable difference one way or the other. One of the potential gains of using IAA is that it can switch your Auto-Acoustic Management-equipped hard drive into Performance mode for quicker seeks (this will reduce seek time on a Seagate Barracuda ATA IV by about 1ms, for instance).

It depends on what application you're talking about. If you don't install Intel's INF and IAA updates, you can experience up to a 40% decrease in FPS in certain games (UT2K3 and Q3A for example).

Here's the order you should install drivers after a clean install (assuming you're using a board based on an Intel chipset of course):

1. INF update
2. IAA update
3. Video drivers

Everything should run smoothly from there. :)

I concur with Evan. After one clean install, I forgot to install IAA and GTA3 ran like crap even at 640x480. after installing IAA, the game runs buttery smooth on my system.

Thats odd. IAA is an optional set of IDE storage drivers. You dont have to install them. The inf chipset drivers on the other hand, must be installed for proper system function.

I have them installed. I don't see any difference at all. But since my systems run stable and fast with them, I just leave them there.

Without IAA my WD 1200JB HD, Lite-On CDRW and DVD run awfully slow. No doubt, it's an absolute must have.

It's easy to install. Try it and see for yourself. If you don't like it, uninstall it.

Thanks for bringing up the Application Accelerator topic Hamburgerpimp. Searching the AT archives doesn't turn up too much opinion on the subject.

There was an incident with EAC not working after installing Application Accelerator, but that appears to be solved by putting wnaspi32.dll in the program's folder and telling it to use 'Installed external ASPI interface' on the interface tab of EAC options (the fix worked for my system at work with IAA installed).

I've been making setup plans for my friend's new P4PE rig. I'll ghost the clean install after the INF update and before installing IAA. If he is unhappy with post-IAA performance we'll revert and see if non-IAA is any better. If it were my own rig I'd bench before and after regardless, but if I were to do all the tweaking I'd like I would wear out my welcome. This thread promted me to approach IAA with a little caution - so thanks for the heads up. :D

I haven't installed it. I run SCSI drives mostly, so I don't know if I'll need it. I suppose it helps with IDE drives like mechBgon said.
