i'm under the impression that AMD CPU's run a bit hotter than the intel counterparts. i was just wondering why this is? thanx

The winner for the Highest Heat Dissipation Catagory goes to the Pentium 4 3.2C w/ Hyperthreading.

That impression is left over from the days of the Athlon Thunderbird 1.4GHz. Rumors have said that some 1.4's glowed red while being run. Peace.

ya i have to say intel cpus might run abit hotter. if you see OC for intel ocs running on 1.55-165v they have pretty competitive heat temps with amd chips running much higher volts...

Also remember that there's a distinction between higher thermal output and just plain hotter. Thermal output is measured in watts, and temperature is measured in degrees. For more CPU fun, check out www.sandpile.org, which has typical & max thermal outputs for tons of CPUs (look under the impl header), as well as other info.

without oc'ing, i thought it was because amd in the past have had higher default voltages than intel. amd's were running 1.65, 1.70v, etc...

I have RMA'd many AMD (XP) processors due to overheating. At least the Intel procesors have the throttling and you are able to tell when things are bad. It might not be an AMD thing since all were on a VIA chipset board but still they were dead.

I've never had a problem w/ any of my AMD's I'm running AMD right now, w/ a cpu temp of 49c

2200D MHz BT: 76.8 W (1.65 V) - AMD Barton max power.
~74 W (2.26B GHz 0.13 µm µPGA478 @ 1.525 V) - P4B max power.

Looks like mhz for mhz the power usage is very similar (as long as you are figuring for the same amount of power hungry cache).

~103 W (3.2D GHz 0.13 µm µPGA478 @ 1.525 V with HTT) - P4C raging power usage :D (thats about the same as my AMD 1ghz T-bird I had running at 1.4ghz @ 2.0vcore - bad stepping :()

Ditto. I have two dozen AthlonXP's humming along nicely down at the office, and another ~16 slated for this fiscal year. Except for my 2500+, and my 1GHz Duron "service loaner" system, all of them run stock retail AMD cooling including the stock thermal patches! :) Very nice.

Thunderbird cores running overclocked at 1400MHz or more were the champion of heat. Overclocked T-breds and P4's run similar temps when comparing PR rated speeds.
