I was looking into buying a new, cheap modem and found out about the intel/ambient chipset modems. If you haven't heard about it, there's an info page here - http://developer.intel.com/design/modems/products/md563x.htm

Here's what I want to know - What's the difference between the Intel/Ambient modem chipsets? I'm looking to buy one of these on ebay, but they have various chipsets, like MD5620, MD5628D, or just "Ambient". I really want to get the cheapest one, but I don't want to end up with another winmodem (did ambient ever made a winmodem?).

Any info on these would be appreciated :)

Okay, im not a total expert but I have read/used alot of modems in the past, from my understanding, the ambiant/intel WINmodems (which is what they are 'a winmodem') are not as good as the Lucent or US robotics winmodems. So if your going to get one, get a lucent or even better IMO the usRobotics.

Next,
IMO, If you can spend a little more, I think its well worth getting a hardware modem such as this US robotics modem.

But if cheap is the name of the game, get the Lucent or preferably the US robotics winmodem.
