SAN FRANCISCO—Dancing robotic spiders, touch-free vending machines and reality television: These were among the directions mapped out for Intel Corp. by Chief Executive Brian Krzanich at a company event on Tuesday.

Intel’s foray into television was perhaps the biggest surprise, and a sign of Mr. Krzanich’s determination to bring his company’s vision to a larger audience. Intel will develop a show with Mark Burnett—the producer who created “Survivor” and many other titles in the reality genre—and Time Warner Inc. ’s Turner Broadcasting unit.

Bearing the working title “America’s Greatest Makers,” the program is aimed at do-it-yourselfers who turn chips and other components into gadgets. Contestants will compete for a $1 million prize. The show is scheduled to appear on TV and other media channels in 2016.

“This is a huge cross-platform media event,” said Mr. Burnett, who appeared on stage with Mr. Krzanich.

Intel has reasons to jazz up its image. The company, whose chips have long powered most of the world’s PCs, has run into slowing growth as that market has declined.

Intel also largely failed to get its technology into smartphones, a market that now far surpasses PCs in terms of the number of chips purchased each year.
CPUs have hit the wall and are out of fashion?

Dunno, seems more like they are copying low class reality TV.

Definitely trying to find their future by a shotgun approach, realizing their old segments are not hip anymore, and gunning in all directions. Kind of sad. I'd like to see some more hard core revolutionary tech instead. Intel sure has the R&D budget to fund that if anyone.

Well it is a development forum, meant to engage existing and would-be developers so as to create new markets for future Intel products. If they didn't address the wide variety of market opportunities with this year's IDF then I suspect even more people would fault Intel for having a lack of efforts outside their core market (which is well established and in little need of assistance in fostering a development ecosystem).

At the very least, it'll get the Intel brand out there...to whomever actually watches this show, heh.

I got the same impression by following Brian Krzanich's keynote at IDF. Reeked of a foul mixture of desperation and aimlessness. Came off rather cheap, even by the low "CEO-presentation" standard one must apply to such events.
