Intel adds virtualization to Q8300, four other processors Discuss Posted by: Cristian on April 17, 2009 12:58 Intel has just announced that it will be making an update to five of its processors, in order to add support for Intel Virtualization Technology. The CPUs which will get their virtualization on are the tray Core 2 Quad Q8300, the Core 2 Duo E7500 and E7400, and the Pentium E5400 and E5300. According to Intel, the VT-enhanced versions of the mentioned chips will start being delivered on June 12 and since they'll feature new S-spec and MM numbers they may require a BIOS update (to enable the virtualization tech).

They only specifically mention the Q8300 but I would imagine they would include the Q8400 too, right?

Q8400 already supports VT.

Woot, I didn't think any Q8xxx had it.

Heh, it always confused me that VT was disabled anyway. (along with the latest SSE extensions)
The target market for those low end chips doesn't really care, and VT and SSE4.1 don't even make a huge difference in performance. I guess they want to encourage server operators who don't need performance but want VT to buy the higher end cpus though.

Pretty nice for a free upgrade. A bit unfortunate of you get stuck with old chips. They should have renamed them with a 5 on the end or something.
