INTEL a warning would have been a good idea...

Picked up a volcano 7+ for my northwood 1.6 this weekend. I have been using the p4 1.6 for a few months with the retail hs/fan w/ the thermal pad. When i removed the hs/fan and got ready to put the volcano on, the chip got ripper right off the mb without unlocking it off the mb. It was almost supper glued to the top of the hs. I even ran prime for a while to heat up the cpu and maybe soften the pad.

I am pretty pissed off cause that could have destroyed my 1.6a or my mb. Intel should have had a warning on the packaging saying" use this hs/fan if u never plan on removing the cpu out of the mobo"

I got some artic silver 3 underneath the hs and it's running really cool. High speed is a little noisy (6000rpm) but it pushes a lot of air and keeps the cpu really cool. Don't mind it if i got the head phones on.

I have to agree ... they should have a sperate thermal paste or something not already attached to the HSF. When i built a 1.6a for a friend i wiped all of it off before i put it on the cpu, put some reg thermal paste on and all is good.

this happened to me too when i went to put my thermaltake orb on, stupid thing yanked out the cpu and in the process bent a few pins, so i had to very gently bend the pins back to straight just to get the cpu back in the socket

That's why it's always better to clean the thermal pad off and to apply a good thermal compound instead.

Dont forget to check your northbridge too for any thermal pad. My abit Bg7 had a pad and paste on it. Which is really really bad for thermal transfer so I scraped that Shat off and put some artic on there.
