Intel 965 always switches to 1920x1200 when connected to external display

I'm going crazy with a laptop using the Intel 965 chipset. I set it to use 1024x768 when connected to an external display (in either clone or external only mode). This setting is retained for some period of time, but it sometimes inexplicably switches to 1920x1200, not exactly projector friendly. If I change the resolution to 1024x768, things are fine for some period of time, but within a few days it decides to go back to using 1920x1200.

Any ideas? I'm using the latest GMA drivers from Intel and have updated the laptop (Lenovo x61) to the latest BIOS, but it had no effect on the issue. I'm more than happy to hack the registry and limit the resolution of the laptop to 1024x768 under all circumstances, but don't know how. Thanks in advance.

What's the native resolution of the projector? If the projector is defaulting at 1920x1200 then the video port is detecting this from time to time and re adjusting the resolution to suit the projector.

The laptop is attached to a variety of projectors, but they are business projectors that usually top out around 1280x1024.
