I just got a new laptop at work for me to use at the office and in the field. I do some gaming at the hotel when I'm out of town. This computer came with a 1.66 Ghz Intel CPU and Intel 945GM chipset video and 1 Gb of RAM. Can someone by point of reference say where this video chipset falls within the grand scheme of video cards etc over the past 5 years. Is this thing at least as good as a Geforce 2 or better? I realize integrated graphics aren't all that good but I thought I'd see if this was even servicable. I didn't have any part in picking out the computer. While it should be a good work horse for regular office work (some graphical like ARCGIS), I hope I can use it to relax after work in the hotel room too on my MMROPG which is not highly demanding but requires decent graphics to run ok.

What MMORPG? The 945GB 3d performance is *horrible*. Might be around GF2MX / Radeon 7000VE levels. Although if you crank the detail and res down, and make sure AA/AF are off, it might be playable, but it truly depends on what game.

Yes it is. It is highly dependent on the CPU too. The desktop version is comparable to a Geforce Ti 200 in older games, and FX5200 64-bit in newer games. Multiply that by 0.6 and you get the mobile version. One advantage(and its disadvantage) is changing resolutions doesn't impact performance as much as it would on other video cards.

If you mean MMORPG by World of Warcraft, yes you can play. I used to put 800x600 low-to medium quality, but to get better graphics I put everything high on the same resolution. There is lag, but you do get used to it :).

Celeron D 2.53GHz
GMA950(desktop variant of 945GM in your laptop)
Single DDR2-533

Thanks for the feedback.

I didn't expect the building graphics chipset to be anygood, but I do play an MMORPG called RoseOnline www.roseonlinegame.com and it would run on the old laptop which had a Geforce 2 GO chipset. I assume the INTEL 945GM is just as bad as the Geforce 2 GO chipset so the game will run just as laggy? No improvement whatsover?

The new laptop has 1 Gb system memory and a faster CPU at 1.66 Ghz - I think the old one had 512mb and 1 Ghz. So I might see a tiny improvement. I have a gaming desktop PC built on in an Antec Lanboy case that I take to hotel rooms for my gaming since laptops are usually pretty crappy. It's Rig#2 in my siggy. I may have to keep dragging it around with me.
