im just pricing out some paths of a overhaul im considering, butprobaly wont due for sometime
right now im sitting on the rig in my sig 🙂

while the intel is roughly 325 the amd 235, thats $90
ive read out there that even the Intel 9300 does better than the 9850, but for the price difference,
from more of an opinion standpoint, im leaning towards the intel,

more for practical uses, video editing(nothing major),playing games, burning dvd's,cant think of anything else, maybe flying a kite and making smores

I'm in the same boat.

To be honest, after all the reading I've been doing, I'm going with Intel. There isn't a single thing the Phenom is better at. The 9450 is going to run cooler, burn less energy and kick all kinds of Phenom ass in whatever you're doing. Although I'm not going with a 45nm Q9450, I believe this still holds true for the Q6600 which can be had for $199 which makes it more of a steal.

The Q9450 is definitely better than the Phenom 9850, but is it worth the price difference? Thats a tough one. As Drew said, the Q9450 uses considerably less power, so in the long run the energy savings make up some of the difference in price. In terms of overall performance, its about 20% faster than the Phenom, give or take.

I also agree with Drew re the Q6600, at $199 its hard to beat for value. Its not 45nm so it uses up a bit more power than the 45nm C2Qs, but is still better than Phenom in this regard.

IMO the real dilemma should really be between a Q9450/Q9300/Q6600, and I'd be leaning towards the Q6600 in such a case.

heh i already have a dual-core, i dont really wanna get another dual-core if a quad is to be had.

plus if im upgrading, for a little extra id suck it up and get the extra L2

Sadly any of the Intel quads will beat the phenom, and the picture even gets worse if you consider overclocking because the Intel quads overclock very well but the phenom doesn't

Q9xxx > Q6XXX > 9850

If you run a DDR2 system, the 9300 isn't a bad buy. I picked mine up for 250 open box and its doin alright. Just make sure you have DDR2 1066 or above for it to rule out memory overclocking hickups

I just want to build an inexpensive beast with tons of ram, ATI HD 4870, and a quick quad-core processor. Maybe by summer's end, the 16GB DDR2-800 kit from G.Skill will drop in price. 😀
