Intel 920

Hi folks, I am new to this forum, so if I am in the wrong category please forgive me. I need to know if I can use an Intel 920D with an ASRock 775 dual mobo. I already have both but wanted to make sure before I smoked something. Thanks, delmer

If its this one it does support it, but thats a horrible processor. Get e Core 2 Duo, any model will blow that 920 away.

It's not a "horrible" processor, but it's weak compared to the C2D and Athlons, and, it's HOT. It'd help if you posted the mobo model/revision because Mark is correct, the C2D is a superior choice for not that much more.

actually I only see a 925D listed, no 920 (don't make them anymore ?) and the 925 is $130, and the E4300 is $176

Yes it does support it. I used that same board with my D915. The D915 is the same as the D920 except that the D915 has the C1 stepping and has VT disabled.

Its not a "horrible" processor. I'm doing pretty well with my D915 except for OCing issues which is my Foxconn board's fault. I had my cpu stable at 3.5GHz on that ASRock mobo.

Well, for a few bucks more you can have 3 times the performance...C2D vs PD. No PD is even worth buying anymore.

Come on, just help and leave him alone.

He already bought it (for what ever the reason, maybe it was on sale or maybe he was told by the sales rep. it would be ok but wasn't too sure about it... but the main thing is he has the cpu and asked a simple question about compatibility).

Looking at Ebay completed sales, I see PD 920s going for $75-$100 .. I'd sell that puppy in a heartbeat, and toss a few extra bucks in and get a C2D. I just moved from a PD 915 (same as 920, afaik : 2.8ghz, 2x2mb L2, 800fsb) .. sold it and dropped in a C2D 6400, and boosted it mildly to 2.4ghz (E6600 speeds, but 6600 has 2x the L2, meh) ..

my 3dmark 01 went from 18,000 to 31,000 !!! With Evga 7800GT VIVO. Laggy low-frame rates in games like Titan Quest have vanished as well, and encoding is easily 2x faster. Also runs circles around my AMD X2 boxes at work.

Which revision is your board, the Rev1 does not support the 65nm chips.

Thanks for your reply, I am looking at the MB and I'm not sure where to look for that Rev number. I don't see anything where it has the word "Rev" written. I assume that means "revision". Would any other number give you a clue?

There should be a sticker on the board on top of where the audio jacks are, that will say Presler, or Presler compatible if it's got 65nm support. Mine didnt' have the sticker, my 830 worked fine on the board, but my 920 didn't.

I can't find a sticker where the audio jacks are, but on the board itself it has in pretty big letters, CONROE, PRESLER, FSB1066 Dual Core CPU. On top of one of the smaller chips there is a sticker that says "775-DUAL-VSTA P2.20 -9A". Hope some of this helps. I appreciate your help.

You should be good to go then, it's rev 2.2, so it supports Presler and even supports Conroe, so you could upgrade later.
