Intel 915GMS Chipset

Hey all,

I'm looking for a laptop for my father, who is a pilot and travels frequently. Hence I am looking towards an ultraportable such as the Toshiba R200 or Lenovo ThinkPad X41. However, it is essential that he be able to run Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004. FlightSims minimum requirements are pretty modest - 128MB RAM, 450MHz processor, & 8MB 3D DirectX 7 or above graphics chip. My question is this: will the Intel 915GMS chipset be able to run this program at at least 30FPS? I haven't been able to find an answer with Google, and no-one around here has a demonstration machine on which I can benchmark.

Alternatively, does anyone know of a 12" rugged ultraportable that has a dedicated nVidia or ATi graphics chip on it? All of the ones I've seen so far just have the Intel chip.

An NVidia 5700 gets about 3000 in 3dmark2003 and the GMA 900 gets about 1000 pts. The 5700 spits out about 39 fps in Flight Sim 2004, so the GMA is going to fall well below the 30 fps you want at 1024x768 res.

I think the minimum you can go with is an x300 / Go 6250 but you'd need to research those a little bit more to find the best one.

THE GMS chipset is the same as all the other 915 chipsets, but ther eis no option for the OEM for dicrete graphics use. Any current Laptop on the market should run that fine just allong as you do not pump up the resolution
