Hello all,

I have a Compaq nw8000 notebook that has the Intel 855PM chipset. The original 7200rpm Hitachi hard drive died and I need to replace it. I'd like to get a 160 GB drive...but I can't find any information about the chipset supporting 48-bit LBA or not.

Does anybody else know? Thanks!

I've found Compaq/HP's tech support is extremely helpful. If your machine is still under warranty, phone them at their toll free number. If not, they should still help you through their online chat system.

Hope that helps. :)

More info...

I recently updated my old Compaq M2010US lappy with a 160 GB drive. It uses the Intel 822GM chipset, and it works with no problems. :)

Thanks for the help, Harvey. The notebook is definitely out of warranty, so I'll try their online chat. I can't seem to find many others out there that have the nw8000 model.

I can tell you that I use the exact same 855PM chipset in my laptop and the Southbridge/ICH4-M can support a 160GB drive. So I don't see much of an issue.

Wow, HP's support was completely worthless. He linked me to the quick specs for my notebook model from the HP site.

ELopes580, thanks for letting me know. I'll order the hard drive and cross my fingers. Since it worked for you, it should work for me.
