Intel 845 bad for oc?

Nilonym

Everyone here seems to use SiS based chips for oc'ing northwoods. Are Intel 845 chipset mbs not viable for oc'ing?

Thanks,
Jeff

So then the reason most people seem to prefer the SiS chips is more modern features like DDR333 and USB 2.0?

Jeff

Oh, and I guess also the fact that the 845 doesn't formally support 133Mhz FSB. Can anyone with such a mb (like the Gigabyte GA-8IRXP) confirm that you can run the mb @133MHz? I just want a cheap 1.8a at 2.4 with little fuss.

Thanks.

Jeff

🙂I'm running mine right now at 140 fsb bios f6d cpu voltage at 1.575 no problem ,everything super stable, cpu temp idle 34-36c spike temps in games to 48-51c. pci/agp at pll16, cas2.0 on samsung pc2100.stock voltage to dimm slots and agp slot.

You've got to be kidding. People are getting very high overclocks with the 845D. THUGSROOK has a 1.6A @ 2.8 GHz on a P4B266 845 board! I've set up two 1.6A's running 2.4 GHz on Epox 4BDA's running DDR400. I'll take it over SiS any day.

Hey oldfart,

It seems like I could go
1) 1.6a@2.4 and DDR400 (1.6x150x1.33=400), or
2) 1.8a@2.4 and DDR333 (1.8x133x1.33=333)

I know that (1), while riskier, might be higher performance. I don't want to do anything beyond retail hsf, and I will be using a GA-8IRXP. Do you think it's worth saving $40 (diff between 1.6a and 1.8a) and shooting for (1), or is it going to be a lot more risk/work?

Jeff

and I will be using a GA-8IRXP
AFAIK, the Epox 4BDA/(2+) are the only 845 boards that will qllow 4:3 mem timings above 133 FSB. I like the lower multiplier, higher FSB, DDR speed design myself. Go for the 1.6A

Perhaps a stupid question, but I want some clearance 🙂

Can u use ie. PC3200 memory on motherboard that supports only PC2100/PC2700?

Like Nilonym wrote: "1.6a@2.4 and DDR400 (1.6x150x1.33=400)" would it work fine with DDR400 memory or does he mean that he will run PC2100, PC2700 memory in that speed only?

Like I said stupid question, but I just want to know if it's better to get DDR400 memory when building a system for overclocking.

I'm thinking of buying these products: Northwood 1.6a, Epox EP-4BDA or Asus P4B266, Kingmax 256mb DDR400.

What do u think of that? Will I manage to overlock it over 2ghz?
