Intel 82579V issue (Only 10 Mb/s works)

This could possibly be considered a motherboard problem, since it's an integrated NIC.

I have an Asus P8Z77-V mother board with the stated NIC. The latest drivers are installed: Intel Pro Set Version 17.0.200.2, Driver Version 11.16.96.0. I also have the latest BIOS. I have tried the drivers provided by ASUS as well.

I must force my NIC to 10 Mb/s (half or full duplex works) in order for it to recongnize any connection at all. Auto-negotiate and 1 Gb/s yield no connection at all, and the 100 Mb/s setting yeilds a cycle of connects and disconnects and an unresponsive system. (Sometimes my Display Adapter driver drops out durring this, too.) A connection with a D-Link router seemed to work fine, but a connection to an old Linksys router or to my apartment's ethernet jack (managed by Korcett/SuddenLink) yields the stated problem. My NIC from my previous motherboard works fine, and I have tried multiple Cat 5 cables and recently a Cat 5e cable with the same result.

I also tried uninstalling the drivers, clearing the CMOS, draining the power, and reinstalling the drivers. No go.

I emailed ASUS, and they recommended I do I fresh install (of everything I assume), and if that doesn't work, contact the RMA department. I don't think a fresh install of the OS, etc., will help anything. It seems like it just doesn't like negotiating with 10/100 switches/routers. So it's either a problem with the drivers or an issue inherent with this NIC. I really do not feel like installing a new motherboard, and further, is it even a hardware problem? If I was very confident that it was defective hardware, I might bother, but buying a stand alone NIC seems easier.

Sounds like the wiring might not be up to Gigabit specs?

Try purchasing a 10/100 switch, and putting it in-between your PC's NIC and your apt's ethernet line.

Yep, tried a brand new, Belkin cable.

I have tried a 10/100 router, which still doesn't work.

I tried my roommate's Gb router, and it works. Transferred files between computers and everything. (We couldn't get on the internet, but that's a separate issue, I think.)

Defective hardware, really picky NIC?

Hello there.
I recently purchased a very similar board to you, ASUS P8Z77-V pro. It has the same intel NIC and i also have the same problem as you. It will only connect at 10Mb on a router, cable etc that only the other week was working at 100Mb. so this isnt a problem to do with just a Gb router.

Like you if i try to force it to a higher speed i get problems with the computer becoming unresponsive, the controller seemingly being disabled and enabled at the same time in Network Adapters, (its there, but when you right click the option is 'enable' and if you try to disable and re-enable in Device Manager then the display adaptor drops out for a minute but recovers. It seems to be working fine otherwise...

Can i ask did you end up finding a solution? seeing someone else with virtually the same board having the exact same problem makes me think perhaps this is an issue with the motherboards implementation or perhaps with the NIC itself. i actually saw your post on Intel's support forum...

did you RMA your board in the end or did you fix it? if you did RMA did the replacement have the same problem?

Any help would be much appreciated, im at my wits end trying to solve this, and i dont want to RMA unless absolutely needed. thankyou

You could just buy a new Intel card. Can be had for less than $20.00.
To me that would be worth not RMAing the board.

After updating drivers and everything, I still have the problem. I have now moved to an environment where my comp is connected to a gigabit router (instead of my old Apt's old Ethernet lines). Auto negotiate, manually setting the nic to 1 Gbps, and 100 MBps now all work AT FIRST. However, now I have the same problem as most of the other people on the Intel forums. It just drops the connection every 30 seconds or so. If I force it to 10 Mbps, it's as stable as can be. Unfortunately, my internet connection is faster than that.

I think at this point I'm just going to buy a new NIC.
