My mate has an i820 motherbaord that will be replaced by Intel with a new version - complete with 128MB of RDRAM - is this a good option - would he be better off with a BX chipset motherboard and more RAAM? can he add his SDRAM?

The 820 board with RDRAM cannot use SDRAM.

820 with RDRAM is marginally faster than BX with SDRAM. The 820 also has the advantage of offering support for 133 MHz FSB.

If you think you are going to need more than 128 MB of RAM and don't want the new features like AGP 4x, then I'd go for BX. If you aren't going to use more RAM, then go for the 820 with RDRAM.

128 MB is sufficient for most things these days, so I'd say go for 820/RDRAM.

Try to insist that you receive PC800 RDRAM, not PC700 and certainly not PC600 !

gtd 2000 I believe you where saying that your friend has an i820 board with SDRAM and intel is going to replace it with a i820 board with RDRAM correct?

His best bet would be to swap the board for one with RDRAM sell the board and RAM and buy a BX and buy about 384 megs of RAM :)

Either way your friend would get better performance since SDRAM on the 820 board is crippled.
