i have a computer with an 810 chipset (it was from my parents for college: i don't have enough cash to build what i want, unfortunately) and i was wondering if these chipsets will work with coppermines. my computer is an HP 4535. i know that the 810 is about the same as the 810E, and that the 810E supports coppermines. i also know that my bios supports the 133mhz FSB speed. why would thise bios have the 133 speed, and not support FCPGA processors. however, i have not gotten satisfactory answers from intel or HP. HP tells me that i am probably right that the FCPGA chips should work, but that isn't all that comforting for me.

thanks for any help you can give!

The i810 does not support 133MHz FSB; the i810E does. That's the difference between the i810 and the i810E.

It does support FC-PGA processors, although you should probably look for a BIOS update.

You might be lucky....HP have been using OEM ASUS motherboards for a while now, so it may be relatively easy to put in an upgrade.

well, the current BIOS that ihave for the 810 DOES support the 133 FSB speed. the board in the computer is an ASUS, so that does make me hopeful.

thanks!

Maybe you can borrow and FC-PGA processor from someone for a day and test it. That will determine if it will work. In the past, ASUS have said that the BIOSes available on the ASUS websites are not for use with their OEM boards in HP systems. I haven't actually found anyone who is willing to try flashing their BIOSes with the ones directly from ASUS, so I suggest you look around on the HP website for updates.

It should work with Coppermine Celeron II as I have one in my secondary FlexATX box with Asus 810 board. According to Asus, my board should also support 133MHz bus, but I have never put in PIII in it. I am pretty sure that 100Mhz Coppermine PIII works in it.

Although you are calling 810 a piece of crap, I personally like 810. It's inexpensive and perform pretty well. You do not have to buy a video card or a sound card though I have to admit that I have V3 2000 PCI in my box. Anyway, it's perfect for most of the people whom I have been building systems for.

Just for your information, my Asus FlexATX board is very sensitive to overclocking although it has quite a few tweaking options in its BIOs. Many CPUs which overclock fine on other BX or 815 boards do not overclock well on the board.

i know that mine is socket 370, not fc-pga, i really jut need to know if it will support the voltage difference: i can always get a neo370 adaptor, if it can make the voltage change.

I got my mom one of those boards with celeron 600, I got the board with onboard video and sound slow as all heck. Even for web browsing. Oh well she likes it. Maybe another 64megs of ram would help.

Anyways good luck on your upgrade.

jsbush,

It's strange to know that your mom's Celeron 600Mhz/Intel 810 system is having a problem surfing on the net.

Intel 810's integrated video is not the best to run the latest and greatest 3D games at the higher resolution. However, it is at the level of Intel 740 video or a bit better, so you should not have any problem running Intel Explorer.

Well it's slow. My friends P2 350mhz with 64megs of ram and a Sis motherboard with onboard 8meg video card and onboard sound runs a lot better. She is running windows ME though. Which is a peace of crap.

Well, you might want to look at some setting/drivers. Intel 810 is not a slow chipset although the video is not quite a GeForece and the sound is not quite a SB Live. As long as you do the normal stuff, it should perform as good as any other chipsets.

Celeron is about 15% - 20% slower than coppermine PIII at the same speed. Or your Celeron 600 should be as fast as PIII 500. Hence, it should not be slower than your friend's PII 350. I also think that the performance difference between ME and 98 is negligible.

The only thing I can think of is that, if you only have 64MB RAM, it can be a problem because Intel 810 shares 8MB out of 64MB for its video. And having only 46MB for the system is a little low for Windows ME. As memory is so cheap today, you might want to buy her a 64MB or 128MB slick for the X-mas present.
