Question Intel 670 NVMe (QLC, third-gen?), looking pretty decent.

IMO its too expensive for what you get.
Sabrient rocket Q4's cost cheaper and are faster.

IF it was a optane drive, then i would have nothing to complain about, but its just a 670p which is the successor to the 660p which i always considered a budget nVME.

Not bad speeds/endurance for most users, but look at that MSRP!

$155 for a 1TB NVMe 3.0 x4 QLC drive is not hot in 2021. There are too many better performing drives with TLC NAND that cost less.

Maybe the price will drop quite a bit down the road, but right now something like a Samsung 970 EVO is cheaper and faster (1TB currently at $140), and the Samsung is not even close to the best $/performance drive in the various sizes.

Sorry, when I looked, they were OOS and didn't list the prices.

I agree, that's a bit TOO expensive, for a PCI-E 3.0 NVMe QLC drive these days. I could see maybe $120, for the "newness", but any more than that? Spend it on a Gigabyte PCI-E 4.0 drive.

Edit: Yeah, they didn't have prices listed when I posted that this morning. The prices that they are showing now, are like Samsung 970 Plus prices, for QLC drives? I get it, Intel likes to believe that they are somehow "Premium" like Samsung, but they're really not "all that". Not with QLC. The doubled speed is nice, but that will now only keep up with the nearly-bottom of the market in NVMe SSDs now, except for the extreme-budget "crap drives". That is NOT worthy of the premium price that they're charging.

I even balked at their 1TB QLC NVMe 660p/665p drives being priced higher than $100-110.

The 665p has been around $90 off and on for a few months (Newegg had it for $81 6 days ago). Currently $104. I'm a little curious about why they use 8GB span to measure IOPS .

Based on history, Intel SSDs always seem to launch at too high MSRPs.

If this drive settles in the $110 range (in the 1TB size), it would be a compelling buy.

Otherwise, drives in the entry-level category like the WD SN550, or the multitude of midrange drives in the $120-$130 range make the new Intel drive a poor value in comparison.

Edit:

I see Anandtech has their 670P review up ("Improving QLC, But Crazy Pricing"):
https://www.anandtech.com/show/16503/the-intel-ssd-670p-review
The retail consumer SSD market is a bit of a mess right now: the semiconductor shortages are being felt here as well, and much of what is in stock is starting to creep up in price. Even so, the recommended customer prices Intel is launching the 670p with are way out of touch.

Yup+++

Virtual Larry, just bought a Gigabyte 1 TB NvME4 drive from Newegg for $155.00. Using it on a Gigabyte X570 Aorus Elite mb with a 3900x/Rad VII combo. FAST!

I also have a Sabrent 1Tb Nvme4 for my MSI X570 Unify mb FAST!

I agree with aigomorla's assessment - too expensive.

I agree completely, for the prices that they are asking, as I pointed out and you confirmed, you can buy a PCI-E 4.0 ("Gen4") NVMe drive instead.

From storagereview's benchmarks' looks they refined the firmware quite a bit to get it more well behaved like the 660p. The 665p got a little goofy where latency was sometimes worse. Amazing that they are at 144layer. Let's see how cheap these get. These are the awesome budget drives that were often $85 for a TB. I'll be picking more up whenever that happens again.
