Intel 540s worth it at $380

Intel 540s for $379.99 CAD. Is this a good deal for a 1TB SSD?

The Samsung 850 EVO 1TB is currently $70 more expensive at $450.

Are there any issues with the 540s? Only thing I see to see is that it doesn't have capacitors for additional power loss protection.

I would also consider looking for a Mushkin Reactor 1TB. Good controller and MLC.

Newegg.ca had them for $249 (CAD) but are currently sold out.

Amazon.ca has them for $384.

Intel usually has a pretty good reputation, but the 540 is so new at this point that we really don't know how it will stand up. Personally I'd aim for a slightly older design. MX200 1Tb maybe?

AFAIK there is no client SSD with power loss protection on the market.

Performance vice it seems to be in between Adata SP550 and OCZ Trion 100. Would pick one of the the other alternatives.

The current pricing of the Intel SSD 540s makes my recommendation quite simple: don't buy. The 180GB and 360GB models are only a few dollars cheaper than the next size up, and the four standard sized models are priced above many MLC drives. The OCZ TR150 provides better performance for a far lower price. The SanDisk X400 provides much better performance, the same 5-year warranty period of the 540s, and M.2 models for a significantly lower price

Wow, that drive's performance is pretty bad compared to the competition, and it will be priced higher than the other budget drives that offer better performance at a lower price.
