I would also consider looking for a Mushkin Reactor 1TB. Good controller and MLC.

Newegg.ca had them for $249 (CAD) but are currently sold out.

Amazon.ca has them for $384.

Intel usually has a pretty good reputation, but the 540 is so new at this point that we really don't know how it will stand up. Personally I'd aim for a slightly older design. MX200 1Tb maybe?

Quoting myself in a similar thread: "My opinion is that as long as you don't expect it to do great under heavy workloads or when writing a lot of files and accept that it may suffer from read speed slowdowns it's an option."

Looks like intel's drive is a solid Don't buy!.

The current pricing of the Intel SSD 540s makes my recommendation quite simple: don't buy. The 180GB and 360GB models are only a few dollars cheaper than the next size up, and the four standard sized models are priced above many MLC drives. The OCZ TR150 provides better performance for a far lower price. The SanDisk X400 provides much better performance, the same 5-year warranty period of the 540s, and M.2 models for a significantly lower price

Welcome intel to the race to the bottom with crappy planar TLC NAND.

Wow, that drive's performance is pretty bad compared to the competition, and it will be priced higher than the other budget drives that offer better performance at a lower price.

Almost picked up the 1TB m.2 variant of the 540s... glad the store didn't have stock yet.
