Intel 45nm Quad Core launch in 2007

Earlier today, Intel revealed to DailyTech more details regarding 45nm server products, including launch windows and compatibility.

Kirk Skaugen, general manager of Intel's Server Platform Group, opened his statements with "We were originally in the Q1'08 timeframe. Today I'm happy to announce to report for the first time that our server 45nm Xeon products based on the Penryn core will be available into production for the second half of 2007."

Intel's latest desktop guidance claims 45nm desktop SKUs will also launch in late 2007, with volume shipments occurring in 2008. As it stands right now, only the mobile 45nm SKUs are expected to launch in 2008.

Skaugen also confirmed that Penryn-based Xeon processors will utilize the same server platform as Xeon 5000, 5100 and 5300. Nehalem, Intel's next-generation micro architecture on the 45nm node slated for 2008, will require new platform technology and is not compatible with the Penryn platform.

45nm quad-core Harpertown and dual-core Wolfdale were originally slated to spearhead the next-generation Xeon launch in Q1 2008. The existing Bensley platform, Intel 5000P chipset, will still provide the heavy lifting for volume dual-socket on 45nm Xeon. A new platform, Cranberry Lake, will replace Bensley-VS for value dual-socket Intel platforms, and will support Harpertown and Wolfdale.

Lets hear what you've got to say 🙂

Yeah I was just reading about this. Looks like the transistion to 45nm was easier for Intel than even they thought it would be. They moved it up a whole quarter. But, AMD isn't going anywhere.

This is kind of bad since I am an AMD fan but then again I can't wait for the prices to drop on the current Intel Core 2 Duo chips.
Performance > Brand Name. Sorry AMD the darkside has overcome me...

Heh 😛

Anyway, competition is good for creativity, and a tad exciting.
"Your Loyal and Only OMNITECH will this spring release the newest member of its MEGYR-13 line; the MEGYR-13-#23! Only three years after the #22, this state-of-the-art CPU will bless the People it so heartily loves.
The MEGYR-13-#23! From the People's First and Only choice!" isn't.

Diversity über alles.

Edit. After the 22, 22 comes before 23, meh.

Is it just me or does it seem like Intel is just pushing everything out ASAP as if they are scared AMD might have something better? Fire with Quad core by sticking 2 processors together and now this? Just seems to me Intel wants to push everything out so AMd doesn't get any ground once they release their processors.

well thats buisiness.Intel's pretty much trying to kick AMD when its down. And not given em time to get up.
They don't want another netburst regardless of whatever AMD sends out

Blah blah blah. Intel burned me with Netburst. I won't buy another Intel chip. Sorry, I'll wait for AMD. 🙂

Edit* Yes I know the new chips are better but that isn't the point.

Uhh, if they have the capability to extend their lead over AMD, why wouldn't they? Isn't that the whole point of competition? If a basketball team is up 10 points at halftime and can score 10 more to start the second half, do they just give the ball to the other team because they are "far enough ahead"? Of course Intel doesn't want AMD to get any ground back...

This is really sound logic. You were "burned" because you bought a chip that had a bad performance per watt per dollar ratio, so to get back at that company you're buying a chip from another another company that has a bad performance per watt per dollar ratio. Sounds like the only person you're punishing is yourself.

Damn it man 65nm just came out!! Can we please slow the hell down with all this updating and upgrading hardware.
It used to be once a year and now its every couple of months.
Its cool and all that 45nm is just around the corner but damn give me and others a chance to enjoy what we just bought.
Although I will probably be one of the first ones to grab me a new quad core just because I have to have the newest and next best thing but at what price?
Its breaking me and leaving me with empty lint filled pockets..
I just hope they stay with s775 for the new 45nm cpus but with a fsb of 1333 otherwise the updates and upgrades will go on forever and ever. 🙁
For the love of god stop all the madness..!!

which raises my question. I heard several different mixed things about whats comeing out in q1\2. I was under the impression that the S775 Core 2's with the 1333 FSB were comeing out but now im hearing all of these different things like the new xeons and the new P somethings etc.......So whats really comeing out and when?

Intel produced their first fully functional SRAM chips on 65nm in August 2004 [press release]. The first 45nm SRAM was demonstrated in January 2006 [article]. That's a year and a half between nodes. Also, it's not like 65nm chips are just now becoming available. Yonah was the first 65nm CPU and it's been available since January of 06 so products on 65nm have been available for over a year.

Anyway, if you want to "stop all the madness" and be happy with what you have forever, then just dont upgrade. Leave all the new goodies to the rest of us I guess. I personally would never wish for technology to stop advancing just because I want my machine to be "the best" for a longer period of time.

id like to see how u do the math with that performance per watt per dollar ratio ^^

I was not asking for techonolgy to stop advancing I just wish it would slow just a tad.
Sorry to say but not all of us are super rich like you sexyK,I for one dont just get ****** handed to me.
I have to work hella hard and save left and right just to buy or make an upgrade.
So put that in your pipe and smoke it!! LOL 😉

i dont think mainstream technology is advancing so much faster and faster. thats an illusion caused by the massive amount of money companies will spend for marketing, and by all those *inq-tgdaily-whatever*-news stories and rumors in forums we are feeded with everyday. if u take all that away what have u left? A64, C2D, a couple of new GPUs...impressive or confusing? only if ur already infected ^^

what im getting at with my post is I heard that the new FSB chips were supposed to be comeing out in q1 or q2 of this year and would be set at the same price as the current Core 2's............all I have left to buy for my new rig is the CPU and Video Card. So I have been holding off to make sure I get the best I can for the money and im hearing all of this confuseing stuff about whats comeing out and when and im starting to loose track of whats going to be my best bet to buy.

What I have bought so far

Asus Striker Extreme
Antec 900 Case
Thermaltake 850 Watt Modular Power Supply
WD 250 Gig Sata 3.0
2 Gigs of Corsair Value DDR2 667
Sceptre 22 inch Widescreen LCD Monitor with HD
Win XP SP2 With that upgrade coupon thingy

I never said that I am rich and will always buy the latest and greatest, in fact until last month I had a Northwood 2.4C and a 9500Pro. All I am saying is that it's stupid to wish for technology to slow down no matter what your situation. Just because something new comes out a month later doesnt mean I will be sobbing that my system is now slow and useless. In fact, I wish technology would advance as fast as possible - all it means is that next time i'm ready to upgrade my options will be that much better/faster.

Think about it this way: you upgrade now to a top of the line system knowing that you wont be able to upgrade again for 2 years. When two years comes around would you rather shell out your hard-earned cash for something 10% faster, or something 100% faster? Even if it means my system is "low-end" sooner than I'd like, I'd still prefer to have more power available next time I upgrade.

Either way, to each his own - you are right, you earned your money through hard work and I'm not going to tell you how to spend it, that's for sure

Yeah I totaly agree with what you are saying I just think it dumb to spend 2k on a system thats out dated a week or month later..

That's what enthusiasts and braggers get for spending money on cutting edge though.

Others buy a system to fit their needs.
