I just finished a small format build today. Gigabyte GA-H77N-WiFi, i3 Ivy Bridge processor with Intel 4000 graphics on the chip. Case is Lian Li PC-Q27 which is pretty small. I got everything installed alright and when I started installing Windows I notices the monitor had small horizontal lines running across at irregular intervals (the monitor is a NEC with DVI input and is fine as it works on my main machine). The after doing the Windows installation I installed the Intel drivers from the Gigabyte disk, planning on updating the drivers following a connection to the Internet. After doing all the reboots to make sure the driver installs were OK, the lines were still there. When I went to do the final Windows update there was an Intel update for the video. I updated and when I restarted the computer nothing comes up on the screen, not even the Gigabyte menu. Everything else seems to be working: PSU, CPU fan, Windows seems to load from the SSD as I can shut the computer down using the keyboard instructions. I really need some help figuring out if this is a MoBo or CPU problem. Any suggestions????

do you have a tv set with hdmi in if so try using the hdmi out on the mobo to the tv's hdmi in.

other method is buy a cable hdmi to dvi try hdmi out on the mobo to dvi of your monitor. I am shooting for your mobos hdmi out to work.

this mobo?

here is a dvi-- hdmi cable

there are a lot of reasons you may have a problem. I am going with your mobos dvi out jack has an issue driver or hardware.

having 3 or 4 video adapters and a few cables on hand can sometimes isolate the problem .

this is a handy adapter

Hi Alan,

What resolution are you trying to output to your monitor?

I recommend updating your motherboard's BIOs to properly support the Intel HD 4000 in your i3 Ivy Bridge to see if will resolve the lines or flickering issues.

Intel is aware if the HD 4000 bug as outlined in their threads here:

Quote from an Intel Tech Support Rep:

Hi All

This issue is a BIOS issue specifically with the Memory Reference Code (MRC) version 1.4.0.0 or older. Please contact your system or motherboard manufacturer for a system BIOS update for your system or motherboard that includes MRC 1.5.0.0 or newer.
If you have a system with 2 or more memory modules and are comfortable with removing all but one of them so that your memory is in single channel mode, try and remove all but one of them and the issue will go away. This can be used as a workaround until you are able to update your system BIOS from your system or motherboard manufacturer that includes MRC 1.5.0.0 or newer.

Keep us updated to see if this will resolve your issue.

Problem is that I now have a black screen, the Gigabyte splash screen never shows and hitting the <DEL> key doesn't do anything. It's a little late now and I'm going to double check all the connections inside the case (a real pain as it's a very small Lian Li PC-q27 case and I have to pull the PSU out to do anything with it. I don't have any HDMI cables unfortunately.

Thanks for the suggestion about the HDMI cable. I ran out to get the cheapest one at PC Microcenter yesterday evening. HDMI output works fine to my TV and it was a shock to see a 32 inch Windows home screen! :) It looks like the DVI port is bad and this MoBo has to go back for an exchange.

Not that I'd necessarily suggest keeping bad hardware, but unless your monitor requires DL-DVI, I think it would be worth considering that you just use the good HDMI port by grabbing an HDMI to SL-DVI adapter. It would be a lot less grief than tearing that system apart and replacing the motherboard.

I wish I had waited a little longer before tearing down the system!!! :D It's all boxed up and I have my RMA from Newegg. I'll file this one away if things go south like this again. I probably need to have some different adapters on hand going forward. Many thanks for pointing this out.

It's weird that in all my years of working with computers this is the first time I've ever had a hardware problem.
