I'm looking to buy a SSD, and I think I've narrowed my choices to these two drives.

Intel 320 128gb: http://www.intel.com/design/flash/nand/320series/overview.htm
Samsung 470 128gb: http://www.samsung.com/us/computer/m...e/MZ-5PA128/US

I use Windows XP as an operating system, so I need to have some kind of manual Trim/garbage collection, and I think both these drives have that (Intel Toolbox, Samsung Magician).

From The Anandtech benches, the Samsung looks like the better performer, however I'm not sure about its reliability/durability/lifespan. Reliability and lifespan are very important to me, and I think I would give up some performance for a more reliable drive. I know Intel has a reputation for reliability, but how does the Samsung 470 compare (for reliability)?

Between these drives for Windows XP, which would be the better choice?

For Windows XP, use Intel SSD, since it will support TRIM. Well, it doesn't exactly suport TRIM, but you can set the SSD toolbox to do manual TRIM operation automatically, so its really just as good as TRIM, and your SSD will not slow down after time. The Intel white paper (don't have link) even calls this operation a "Manual TRIM".

Intel. Samsung sold their HDD division (not sure if that includes SSD's) to Seagate, so for reliability = Intel!

How about a Kingston V+100 series? Those have really great garbage collection.

Oh yeah, just want to make sure partition is aligned under XP.

samsungs are great drives. if they were'nt as good or better than the intel drives i have i'd get rid of them. however, i tested the magician while using W7 and it's pretty slow running, might be a cpu priority thing, idk, but much slower than ssd optimizer as i recall.

The Samsung 470 series seem to be nice drives, but I'd just stick with the 320. Intel drives have a proven track record for reliability, and any miniscule performance difference between the 320 and 470 probably wouldn't even be noticeable except in benchmarks.

Also, if you plan to use this in a laptop, the 470 drives seem to have a very high write power consumption, although read power consumption is OK and idle power consumption is very good (which arguably might be more important for a laptop). But don't believe for a second the Samsung marketing literature of 0.14W idle and 0.24W active. I had been seriously considering one of these for a laptop until I looked up some actual power consumption tests.
