intel 2.8E vs AMD XP 2400+

You would notice it. An XP2400 is a 2 gig processor.

There would be a noticed improvement going form a 266Mhz FSB processsor to a processor with a 800Mhz FSB. I would just get the P4 2.8C. Why get the hotter running Prescott Core?

I noticed a distinct difference going from just and AMD 1.2 Gig Athlon to the XP2800. I didnt notice a giant leap in improvement, but it was definitely noticeable.

A P4 2.8 costs about the same price as an Athlon 64 2.8. The Athlon 64 may be cheaper.
 
For games, an A64 2800+ is a better choice and at least $30 cheaper, it should run about like an XP 3000+. An A64 3000+ should run faster than an XP 3200+ for games, so that would be a 33% jump in CPU.

This assumes you already have a good video card (9800 Pro or faster). If you have anything less than a 9800 Pro you should upgrade the video first (again, for gaming).
 
I suggest you fill us in on what you currently have, like motherboard and graphics and memory wise too, and what else you intend on getting, for a better opinion, since running the 2400+ in a nice nForce 2 motherboard would be better than running the 2.8 with slow DDR 266 ram on a single channel cheap@$$ motherboard.
 
I think the questions asked are most pertinent. I was in a hurry before in my answer. What do you do with your computer ? How much money do you want to spend ? what other components do you have ? What is running slowly ? Do you want to overclock The answers to these determine what you should do. And since both processors can be OC'ed, my previous answer still holds, not much of an upgrade if any at all. Most likely would need a benchmark to notice the difference.

anyway, i have a radeon 9600xt vid card
i know someone that wants a mobo+chip for about 100
i figure they could get the 2400+ and i could get a 2.8E with a mobo for 80$ more
i believe the 2.8E comes with a a ecs mobo, which isnt top of the line, but, the 2400+ mobo isnt the best either
from what i understand, the mobo wouldnt matter all that much
i want to spend about 200 for a good chip with a mobo
the 2400+ works fine, but with some things such as during parts of doom3, the fps drops lower.
 
Why not go for the outpost/Fry deal, the 2800+ w/ECS mobo, sell the ECS, buy an nforce 2 ultra mobo, then get 2 sticks of corsair or kingston 236MB PC3200 ram! That's what I did, but with the 2600+

Sounds like your biggest problem is either lack of memory, or the 9600XT isn't cutting it. Get a 9800pro for under 200 and make sure you have at least 512 meg memory, and you might be happy.
