I have an old 32mb diamond viper II video card S3 savage2000 128bit card. I am thinking about getting a shuttle sv24 or ss40g. They all have built in video on the motherboard that shares memorey from the ram. I belive up to 64mb. Now in a review of the shuttle someone said it wasnt very spectacular. My question is will the integrated video be sufficient enought to run the latest games like madden football, nba live, warcraft 3?

Well the SV24 has integrated SiS VGA, which isn't exactly fast to begin with, but at least supports halfway current programming models (read: DirectX 7 and OpenGL). Speed isn't too bad either, at least if you don't go for too high resolutions.

the integrated video in the sv24 really sucks. its based on the SIS 305 chipset. which blew .

now if yuo get an ss50 , or ss51 then thats the sis315 chipset, the full blown chipset even has t&l but the integrated doesnt. from my use of my sis650 (which is the chipset for p4 with the sis315 built in, the athlon one is the sis740 or something) its about the same speed as a geforce2mx 200.

i think the gbox pc has a via prosavage8 which is about as fast as the sis650 also.

the sv24's onboard video is purely horrible. its probably tnt1 speed. the savage 2000 on a good day is a geforce sdr or so, its gonna be WAAAy slower. you need to go buy a card, i suggest geforce 4mx420 pci.

Ok, that settled, I suggest you buy one of PowerColor's PCI Radeons. They're fanless, they're low profile, and they have CRT+DVI+TV outputs (dual head capable). There are 7500LE and 9000 models.

Thanks for the suggestion $60 wont crack the bank to much, size is real nice too. How about the ss40g and ss50 sis 315 chip would that need to be upgraded too or is it sufficient enough as is? I am still debating between shuttles 3 models. Also what do you think of the ATI all in wonder because i would like a tv in, and the sv24 only has one pci slot.

The SiS 630/730 integrated video is a lot better and faster than the SV24's. If you want TV-in too, then there's little alternative to an ATi all-in-wonder. However I haven't seen a PCI one based on a current chip. On the SiS chipset boards, you're better off using the integrated VGA and a plain TV-in card.

thanks peter and hans007,
I have one last question, what would the sis 315 64mb integrated grafics on the ss50 or ss40g compare to on a video card today like a geforce 2/3? I was only hopeing to play some sports games on my PC and they dont look like they are too demanding on the ram so 64 should be fine but they list the type of card needed.

its about geforce 2 mx200 speed. its still pretty slow. i played warcraft 3 with it at 800x600 and all low settings and it was pretty smooth

shuttle is releasing the ss51g that has an agp expansion slot and comes with Integrated SiS651 VGA. What chip does that onboard video compare too, I am pretty sure i will buy this system because of the future upgradability to an agp card when needed for the newest games.

The graphics engine in SiS 651 is the same derivative of their discrete "315" as in 650 and 740.

rarther than buying the shuttle pc now. wait a bit, cos i recently read a review of a brand new shuttle pc thats soon to be released that had a PCI slot and a AGP slot. Yes an AGP slot.
And from the review, you can also fit very large AGP cards in such as the ti4600. unsure about voodoo5500.
this would be a better option as the AGP slot provides you with a way to have a small quiet PC. thats also got muscle in the graphics department.

also, in regards to the main quesion. use the ViperII as it way faster than any onboard vid chip. if u look around the net a bit then u might be able to find the registary hack than enables the T+L on the card. The ViperII does have T+L but for some reason its disabled in the drivers.

hope uve read this b4 youve brought the pc.

hope this helps.

funny thing BOOM, i just read your post after i bought the ss51g, with the AGP, But i am still unsure what card to put in. I am thinking of a gf4 mx 440, is the TI important, what does it really do?

the GF4 mx`s area basicly GF2s on steroids. the TI or titanium cards are proper GF4 cards.

i wouldnt buy the GF4 MX cards. have a look around for the GF3 Ti200 cards, they should be cheap now, plus they are faster than the GF4MX cards. Plus they do DX8. MX does DX7.

i havnt used, but the radeon8500 card might be worth considering. its faster than both and has great image quality. plus theirs lots of different versions about. LE, LELE, 64mb, 128mb, All-in-wonder. plus they are now cheap now the 9700 has been released.

i`d go for the 8500 128mb personally.

hope this helps.

Whatever you do do NOT buy a Radeon PCI. They take a huge performance hit for being on the PCI bus, much more than nVidia or 3dfx PCI cards do. I have both a Radeon PCI and a SiS 315, and the 315 is definately faster by far.
