Integrated sound on a A7M266

Hi all

I just discovered that my sound card may be a source of some of the problems that I am having with my computer. Trouble is I can seem to figure out how to reset the sound back to the intregrated sound on the MB. It's there but I dont see a device thats disable or anything in the bios that would suggest that it's not there.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

Dave

Does your bios have a "features" section?
The integrated audio may be listed as AC'97 or something to that effect.
Have you tried looking up the manual online?

I've got one of those mobos...
you should be able to find BIOS control for the onboard sound under:

[Advanced] tab

> Onboard Peripheral Resource Control (at the bottom)

there you've got a couple of things.

Onboard AC97 Modem Controller [Auto]
Onboard AC97 Audio Controller [Auto]

the manual says to leave these on Auto, but it says to disable them if you're having trouble, I'd mess with that last.

also, theres:

Onboard Legacy Audio Support
this is most likely where your problem is, make sure this is enabled to use the onboard audio, you can disable if you don't want to use it, but you shouldn't have to. if you're having trouble though, disable it.

also. I'm not exactly sure what the nature of your problem is but also check to make sure:

you've got the latest drivers [Link]
your onboard sound is selected as the default device (Contol Panel -> Sounds -> Audio Tab)

oh yeah. The onboard sound chip for this mobo is the CMI8738, and that is probably how it will be listed in windows.

Thanks,
This should at least get me started. I cannot check for about 12-13 hrs (work :evil😉. I did see the Onboard AC97 controller stuff in the bios and it was set to Auto. I also think I saw Onboard Legacy Audio Support but I'm not 100% on that one.

The trouble is that if I connect the onboard sound to the speakers I dont get any sound out when I play a game for example. I did manage to get some beeps out if it when it was booting but that was about all. This appears to be the problem
your onboard sound is selected as the default device (Contol Panel -> Sounds -> Audio Tab)
. I dont see anything there except the PCI sound card.

Thanks again

Dave

Well downloading the latest drivers didnt help directly. I had no idea where to put them once I downloaded them since it was just a Zip file. So I hunted around and found the old install disk for the MB. When I install the drivers everythihg worked again, so it appears the drivers got deleted somehow...probably I did it and forgot.

So now any idea where I should put the new drivers?

Thanks again!

Dave

What do you mean put the new drivers? If it's just an inf file you can go to device manager, right click on the audio controller, choose update and point it at the inf.

I figured as much but I would like to have them in the default location. That way I wont accidently delete them again 😱
If that is indeed what happened.

I don't really think there is a default place. Some drivers are stored in root. For example ati and Nvidia create a c:\nvidia or c:\ati directory where their drivers are stored. So do lots of other companies. If you delete that directory and move the hardware to another slot, it won't be able to re-install. So I don't think that there's really a default location. Some hardware makers put their drivers under program files too (believe it or not) so it's really up to you as long as you can remember where you stashed them.
