Alright, firstly, I'm not quite sure where this is best suited...but I figured this would probably be the best board....

anyway...

Alright so I have a set of Logitech Z-5500's. I picked these up off of craigslist several months ago for $160 and could not be happier with them. However...

I have my 360 plugged into the S/PDIF optical port of the speakers, and it sounds amazing. For my computer, though, I'm using the integrated audio. It's Intel HD Audio, and I'm actually surprised how decent it does sound over these speakers, but it does pick up some interference and the drivers are abysmal; it only allows for jack reassignment and volume control. Even the little Treble/Bass sliders in the Windows sound settings are grayed out. I feel like my speakers are being underutilized, plus the interference is just annoying.

Now, the problem is I'm using a laptop. I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 running Windows XP. My research has presented 1 viable sound card upgrade:

The Turtle Beach Audio Advantage SRM *cue trumpets*

But seriously, this thing is like $80, and I don't know if it's really worth that. I mean, the drivers look amazing, you get a full spectrum equalizer for each individual speaker *gasp*, so on and so forth, it looks really nice. But the only reviews I've seen for it compare it to the integrated audio of AC97 standards.

Does anyone know how my Intel HD Audio (which, barring the lack of driver adjustments and interference, I would say sounds at least as good as my Audigy 1 card, maybe even my Audigy 2 card...then again I was using much worse speakers with those cards so it's hard to say) would compare to the SRM? Is it worth the money? Are my speakers really going underutilized? Will I really notice a difference? Who will save the damsel in distress? Will our Hero be able to stop the VILLAIN?!?

That laptop has a Sigmatel STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio chip. I found this from the support.dell.com website.

Have you downloaded the latest drivers from this website for that audio chip?

I'm curious how you are connecting your laptop to your Logitech Z-5500 speakers, does it have an optical output just like the XBOX 360?

If so, that is a good thing! That is a good onboard sound chipset so it makes sense to have it.

Sigmatel was bought by Freescale last year but the sound card division is now owned by IDT, Integrated Device Technologies, http://www.idt.com

But you have to go through DELL for any new drivers which is unfortunate because they are not guaranteed to ever provide you with the actual latest ones.

Yeah, I've downloaded the latest drivers from Dell, but same story. I don't know if there's another driver I'm missing because in the Device Manager tere are the yellow ?! next to a couple of things that look like they have something to do with sound.

The laptop has 2 headphone jacks and a mic jack, I just use the sound card's jack reassignment feature to hook up my speakers that way. Apparently there
s some way to get S/PDIF from the HDMI port, but I'm not too clear on that. But I'm using the HDMI port for video out anyway.
