Intake's New Computer (advice please)

Modeps

Lifer
I'll be upgrading soon, and I need a motherboard, ram and processor... I'd like a mobo with integrated RAID so I cant just move over my current setup... (4xdrives in raid0) but other than that, I'd like the best price/performance ratio... AMD preferably... at least 512mb ram... DDR...

the only other thing i'd really like integrated is ethernet, but thats not necessary... no sound (i've got a sblive platinum) and definately no video (geforce4 ti4400) USB2.0 would be leet, as would a nice and fast FSB (whats the fastest on them? 333?)

I've got a 1.2ghz, so I'd like to try at least double the speed, if not grab the best out there.
any suggestions and what I'm looking at in price range? thanks!

The only way you're going to fulfill this request is by going with intel...

My suggestion would be:
ABIT IT7 MAX Intel 845E (RAID, USB 2.0 FSB= 400/533) 135$
INTEL Pentium 4 2.4GHz CPU (FSB=533MHz, retail with heat sink) 193$
Samsung Original DDR333 PC-2700 256MB (x2) 144$

All prices from newegg, total shipped to Idaho (per your dA info): $533

hmm... was kinda hoping to stay away from intel... after all they are the great evil... but that price really isnt all that bad.... any other suggestions?

Sorry, but AMD's got nothing on Intel when it comes to CPU Ghz. best they can do is 2.0 with the XP 2400+. Don't get me wrong though, I'm a total AMD fan its just that Intel's go the edge on them in bandwindth at the moment (FSB and Proc speed).

How's about this for the devote AMD fan:

XP 2400+ (2.0 Ghz) @ approx $200 (find a vendor of choice @ pricewatch.com. newegg, my fav, doesn't have 'em at the moment)
ABIT AT7-MAX2,VIA KT400 (8x AGP, USB 2.0, FSB=266Mhz, RAID and on-board LAN) $180
Same RAM Samsung Original DDR333 PC-2700 256MB (x2) 144$

yes, I'm a script kiddie. woot. 1337. h4x0rz

and no, she didnt get me a puter for christmas, my dad bought me a 286 back in the day though, does that count?

If you want a cheap upgrade for now... do what I did... I did this soley because I plan to upgrade to hammer next year.

Epox 8K5A2+ $100
AMD Athlon XP 1600+ $53
Corsair PC3200 $175

This setup is nice cause #1 Its cheap #2 Itll EASILY hold me over till hammer #3 The memory will be usable with hammer

All you do is set it up, set the FSB to 166 and boom... 1.75Ghz and 166FSB... and Id bet itll do that at default voltage, mine will do 1.85Ghz at default voltage which is faster then the 2100+

If you want the absolutely fastest right this moment... Intel is the way, but Im a AMD fan, and on a budget so this is what I did, and Im just waiting for hammer. So really its your call... Top end Intel will be faster, just more epensive. but no matter what if you wanna OC your memory nice and high get some of that oh so nice Corsair PC3200 🙂

Wow, I wish I had enough money to go for a "cheap" upgrade, I haven't had enough money to update my computer in almost 4 years 🙁

Must be nice to upgrade components every few months.

I dont LOL but I save money, and I spread out the upgrades, its alot cheaper to upgrade a CPU then CPU video MB and ram. So I upgrade maybe 1 thing every 2 months. Heck I had a GeForce 1 DDR till a month ago.

"I dont LOL but I save money"

You don't Laugh Out Loud but you save money .... Wtf does that mean?
