The best way to save gas is to drive less aggressively, make sure your car is in good running condition (change the filters when recommended, do your oil changes on time, keep your tires at the recommended air pressure, etc), and take anything you don't absolutely need out of the car.

Most mods to try and get better fuel economy will either not work or will give such small gains that you'll never recoup what you spent on it.
Ding ding ding, we have a winner! I decided to do exactly this!. I changed the oil and the air filter. It was filthy. Checked the air and brought them all up to 34 lbs, as I load the vehicle up every day, so that's a good compromise. I never load it to the max. Going to try and keep the maximum speed down. This afternoon I was able to stay below 74 mph while freeway driving. It's going to take some time.

Oh, and I had some of the roommate's leftover pizza.😉

Didn't know you had the 1.5 1NZ-FE motor.
The only mods that will actually make a difference are: Lightweight crank pulley & light weight flywheel

The Borla is an axle back and may gain you 2hp.
A header might give you 4.
An intake will give you almost nothing.

I have an Echo, same motor, and I'm fabbing my own long tube header FWIW.
Yeah, these are some cool little boxes. They have a 6 speed manual transmission in Japan. That would be sweet.

I don't think Echo's have a 6 speed in Japan, unless the NA and JDM echo's are different, because the frame needs to be notched to fit a 6 speed into an (NA) echo.

Neither mod is worth your time or money.
How about yours? 😱 😀
Actually, you're right. I'm thinking I need to replace the clutch and timing belt ASAP instead. I've put 120K miles on it since purchase, all work related, and since I need it to last another 150K, I should make it more solid, and let that Toyota reputation do it's thing.
What I will do is find some car shifting noises, rip them to MP3s and burn it on a CD that I leave in the player just playing endlessly, and when I feel the urge to stick my foot in it, (toss $$ out the tailpipe) I'll simply turn up the volume for a minute, listen to a bit of the Zoom-Zoom, and let the savings in gas money pay for something else. Like more gas.😀 😱:'( :'(

Don't buy an intake.

At least on the car I have. People on some forums have done dyno tests.

http://www.grandprixforums.net/dyno-science-cai-box-vs-open-cone-intake-33225.html

Cone on the end of the MAF vs. Expensive CAI kit.

The open cone made 1 more HP. If anything, that was due to different air temps. So, I would say they are dead even. If you spend the cash on a Kit, you're paying for the Name and the aesthetics, nothing more.

Man, people still do dyno comparisons of intakes with the hood open? I thought people were too embarrassed to do stuff like that anymore.

Exhaust is always the best place to start since in most engines that is where the most restrictions take place. Getting more in is of no use if you can't get it out.

Edit.....Crap I forgot where I was and what kind of cars you tend to drive. I just read the actual products listed in the OP. On little 4 bangers just leave them alone. You will likely do more harm than good. These little engines are much more finicky since they don't make much torque. You stand a much better chance of actually loosing usable driving power. Some add that says you will gain a few HP at some high rpm means you will not benefit at all where you drive most of the time and if it adversely affects the area under your torque curve you will notice it.

even tho i agree with this, both parts, i voted for pizza. im hungry.

but if youre hellbent on modding a 4cyl then do the exhaust first. and the dyno wouldnt really show the benefit of an intake would it? i thought that "upgrade" was to help off the line, not at 6000rpm... but i may be wrong, i dont follow the modding stuff as much as some of my friends.

A dyno can show the benefit of an intake, but it requires 2 things:

1. Dynoing with the hood CLOSED
2. A very large, high volume, high velocity fan

This. I had a Borla on a '99 Miata and while it may have pulled a little better near redline, it lost midrange torque. Not good. Plus it was obnoxiously loud and raspy sounding - that alone was enough to make me take it off eventually.
