Text of proposal.

This is something that comes up relatively often in Car vs. Bike discussions. Motorist often say that bikes shouldn't be on the road since they don't pay for the priviledge. This reads to me like simple revenue-harvesting that will effectively decrease the amount of silent, small, non-polluting, bikes on the roads.

Discuss, and please try to keep it civil. :)

So a one-time fee of $25? That's it? Seems reasonable if it'll do anything towards increasing cyclist accessibility/rights/etc. If it's just going into the pension funds of the suits, fvck that.

There's no mention of intended uses for the funds collected. I'll see what I can find.

The tolls on the bridges and tunnels were originally intended to only last until the bridges were paid off. That was 50 years ago. If this tax passes it will probably be an ongoing collection as well. Why not?

Oh, and:

For purposes of this section the term "bicycle" shall mean a two or three wheeled device upon which a person or persons may ride

Everyone, bust out the training wheels!

Sweet, I'm getting a unicycle so I can avoid the fee! hahahaha!!!

One could make the argument that bike should not be subject to this kind of tax since they benefit the health of the rider (who would hopefully be less of a drain on the health care system as a result), do not pollute the air, and do not contribute to gridlock or parking issued due to their small size and portability.

Councilmember Provenzano's staff explained that her intent is to make it easier for law enforcement agencies to hold reckless cyclists accountable. However, according to her staff, the bill is not informed by formal conversations with any law enforcement personnel.
Uh...right.

The city needs money to give to all the people on welfare, now that they have taxed all the businesses into New Jersey.

You aren?t a New Yorker, right?
Clearly you do not understand that the roving bands of reckless bicyclists are the bane of the NYPD.
Uh, yeah.

Uh, yeah.

Not just the NYPD, NYC drivers in general.
Let me just say - all of you biking proponents are not getting any help from bikers in NYC. I don't think I've seen one of them actually obey traffic law. Light goes red, and BAM there they are flying through the intersection. Bikers give me a freaking heart attack when they do things like that.
By the way, this is on more than one occasion, in more areas than just Chinatown (although there it is the worst IMO)

I don't see what this would accomplish toward addressing that problem.

Even if that were true, this is clearly not the intent of the law. If you do something retarded on the bike here in GA, get pulled over, and don't have ID, the cops will simply put you in the car until you come up with something. A "license plate" isn't going to change that.

This is just another pokey way to get money. Obviously there are a few jokers on bikes but it has never been such a big issue that it required legislation.

Pretty much my thinking as well.

15 days in jail is ridiculous. and $25 is ridiculous. Many people ride bikes because they can't afford cars. They buy used bikes for $50-100. $25 is 25-50% of the value of the bike. That's like buying a used car for $4000 and paying $1000-2000 to register it. That's insane.

Sure, $25 isn't a big deal to someone riding around on a $4000 racing bike, but it's a big deal to a poor guy who can barely pay his rent and needs the bike as his only transportation to work.

And people complaining about bicyclists not paying for roads haven't got much of a case. bicyclists use so much less of the road and cause so much less wear that it's essentially negligable. Bicyclists do not create a need for 6 lane highways, or overpasses, or stoplights, etc.

For an extra $35 you can get a 4 letter personalized plate! :D What a joke, yet another reason to stay away from New York.
