So I had some lightning damage to my A/C and Furnace. Had an quote written up for it and it was 6000 bucks with some nice equipment, figuring the insurance company would jew us down so there was some buffer built in. well the adjuster came back, not only did I not need to get a second estimate there independent appraiser came back at a bit over 7000 and thats what they are paying.

I mean what the hell is this world coming to when the insurance company isn't trying to screw you....

Insurance goes by average price+. Could be the person that did yours is on the lowwer end of the scale. Think national chain that charges more then most compared to the 1 man shop that all the profit goes to him so he can charge less. Insurance falls in the middle to maybe a hair above depending on other factors.

I was surprised myself when that oak tree came down across our house and State Farm didn't cause a single hiccup - paid for everything without question.

Keep in mind that the insurance company is also looking at you, as their customer, based on your history. If you are one filing claims a lot then they probably would have been less inclined. I thought the same thing when I needed a new roof last December, but since I had my insurance provider for +8 years and never filed a claim they replaced the whole roof and came back with more than what it would have cost. I actually upgraded the shingles because of it.

Also to add when they pay out a well you the owner will use good quality usually. So the better furance may have less issues, the shingles are less likly to fly off in a storm, etc... so its insurance on the insurance. Why have someone you cover use the cheapest parts and they fail and cause even more damage.

Same reason I used better stuff in my recent addition as its cheaper to spend a couple extra hundred now then thousdands later.

In my experience, home insurance is the only insurance that is actually worth always having. I live in an area with tornado's and heavy ice and thunderstorm damage. I've had trees split due to freezing and fall on a vehicle, damage roofs, take out fences, and destroy a shed. Each and every time I was compensated 100% (or more) without paying a dime.

When you compare that to car insurance where you have a deductible and usually end up getting shitty repairs with used parts, or basically any other form of insurance on the planet (the only one that comes to mind immediate to me is cell phone insurance which is a pure scam anyway), it really makes you wonder why home owners insurance takes care of you so well.

I've never had an insurance company try to screw me, and after working for one and having my wife work for one, you'd be amazed at the sheer number of people trying to get one over on insurance. People bitch and moan that their premiums are too high, the service isn't good, etc, but they should be bitching at the people who screw the insurance companies. They are the real reason insurance costs so damn much. Idiots who tear off roof shingles to try to get their roof replaced because the "wind" caused it, even when their neighbor has them on video doing the damage to people taking ball pein hammers to their car to simulate hail. Hell, even if you just sue an insurance company without a real case, they'd rather settle out of court and pay you a few thousand dollars because its cheaper to do that than go to court and have to incur court costs for the lawyer's time.
