I filed a claim with my renters policy to replace my laptop, Pro 2 and camera, but I only had the receipt for my laptop. I don't know the amounts they come up with to replace my Pro 2 and camera, but they only are paying enough to maybe replace my laptop and camera. Anybody got any good ideas for negotiating, or am I basically fucked?

Note that they haven't closed the claim, but I haven't been able to reach the agent handling my claim all day.

Depreciation. :( They don't pay the cost of the things new. They pay close to the cost of the things used.

Seems there might be two angles in play.

One is whether they accept that you had all three items. That is step 1.
Next is what your policy covers - actual cash value (depreciated value) or replacement value.

If there's no dispute about owning the items, then your approach is to dispute the amount they are offering, based on evidence you can round up, plus taking into account whether you are getting ACV or replacement value.

Not sure, when you filed a police report did you state all three items with their value? When I had to replace personal property that was the major piece of evidence. I also added something later but they didn't argue and refunded everything for the value I asked. For the larger items, I did have some record of payment, bank statement, email, etc.

I'm supposed to get replacement cost. I also gave them a copy of the property sheet that SAPD had me fill out. Theyre also suppose to have a copy of the police report itself. I figured that I need another 570 over what they're paying out to replace my devices.

I think the disconnect lies with the Pro 2 - I'm not sure if the agent understood that it wasn't just a typical cheap tablet, but instead a full PC in a tablet form factor.

Replace based on what? I would talk to the adjuster first before getting all bent out of shape :)

OK, if you're covered for replacement cost, give the adjuster documentation to support what you need to replace them. Best Buy screen captures, whatever.

Eh, I'm not exactly getting bent out of shape, I just want enough to buy new equivalent devices. A Canon T3 is discontinued but a T5 is $400. Surface Pro 2 128 is 517 used or 894 new (amazon). Plus keyboard. They want to pay me $990 for my Y50, but I don't think they're accounting for the extra ram or the SSD,both of which i also have receipts for.

I've requested an itemized appraisal, but it'll probably be middle of next week by the time I see that.

You case is strengthened by whatever documentation you can come up with, be it receipts, warranty info or pictures. If you have that then you have nothing to lose by pushing back.

If you end up short, maybe you can look to the landlord for restitution.

You forgot to mention the 256 CD wallet that you had stolen, valued @ $5/each.

Does your policy state replacement cost or actual cash value.

Replacement cost is going to be for something similar at current values.
Actual cash value is going to be what it cost right now to replace the exact same item.

You really need to look at your policy language to see what it says.

EDIT:
And then you have the depreciation factor. Again, really depends on how your policy reads.

It's Replacement Cost. I verified it with another adjuster. They will pay what it costs to replace it with the same or equivalent device based on the device's current price. I should have additionally asked if it was based on new or used prices, but it's too late now.

I just spoke with Microsoft and they showed me a way to verify which model of SP2 I have with the serial number. I have screenshot it and uploaded it to my claims center along with a shot of how much it costs new from Amazon.
