Well, I got into an accident today. The roads sucked and even after pumping my brakes, my car wouldn't stop and i rear ended him. I will most likely be at fault. I talked teh other person involved. His car just needs a minor paint job. My car, however, needs more. My head light is not broken, but it snapped from the screws that we holding them up. The driver side of the hood is slightly dented. It kind of makes a small hook, but it is only at the tip and it prevents the hood form closing (it sounds big, but it is really small). The the bumper has a very small crack. I doubt this will cost alot to fix. The other person, luckily, was very cool about it. He said that his friend is a body work mechanic that could fix this cheap. Also, stuff like teh head light, i could probably fix on my own. That leaves only 2 things that need to be fixed. So, you guys think that i should make a claim with the insurance company or should i just pay this all in cash?

Well....you pay for insurance, right?

It's always a good idea to file because most insurance companies give you 48 hours after an accident to file. If this guy comes back and claims neck or back pain, he could always sue you if you don't take care of things right.

Granted, I know that filing a claim may cause your premiums to rise, it may be worth it....

I agree with Scarpozzi. Althought paying for the damages in cash sounds like a good way to save money, if this guy ends up going in for medical reasons, you are screwed.

u should have ur brakes checked, or do u mean the road was slippery/wet?

if u go thru insurance, u will be paying for it many times.

so either $1500 over 6 years or repairing your car and the possiblity of a guy suing you for medical damages even though he "sounds cool"?
I'd go with the $1500 myself...

just pay cash as long as you are pretty sure the guy you hit isnt going to come and sue you

And you can be pretty sure how? Any amount of "sureness" is based on opinion or feeling and no fact. It's the wrong move.

I schedualed for an appraisel. But my aunt told me to cancel. She gave me the car under the assumpation that her mechanic fixed it. I told her about my accident and she told me to just sell the car. She told me that the accident was due to the car, not me. It has something to do with the brakes. She didnt want me to have the car, but i really needed one. Anyways, she says that if i skip the appraisel, I will have to pay everything out of my pocket. The appraisel seems meaningless since i know that it is only $300 worth of damages, which is less than my deductable, so it is out of my pocket either way. She says that I should just sell the car as is.

On another note, the insurance company left me a message syaing that the accident was my fault. However, they said that there is still a chance it could be 50/50 due to weather. SO, I have a decision on whether I want to fight it.

Saying all this, would it be wise to skip the appraisel? I am just going to take my aunt's advice and sell the car as is, but if i skip teh appraisel, would that be a flag to the insurance company?
