I just got a qoute to add either a M5 or M3 to my policy. I was a bit surprised to find that the M5 is over $100 cheaper every six months. Does having 4 doors really make that much of a difference to insurance companies?

Not as much of a difference between a turbocharger and lack there of. $120 more a month for the WRX compared to the 2.5RS

Oddly enough, the wrx sti is 200 more every 6 mos than the m3. I even put in a 2006 z06 and was less than the m3. I wonder where they come up with these numbers.

Parts to fix the M3 are 4 times more expensive than for the Z06.

As for the STI, they're way more likely to be wrecked since they're driven by the fast and furious crowd.

As far as parts, are all BMW parts factory dealership only or can you pick up some stuff at regular autoparts stores?

There are plenty of placs to pick up parts. Here's one of the best:

WRX STI = the quintessential ricer car, cheap power
M3 = the nouveau riche or HS kid with rich parents car
M5 = older, wealthier individuals that want the "ultimate" sports sedan
Z06 = the car for the upper-middle class baby boomer going through a mid-life crisis

Given that, it's not difficult to see how they arrive at those numbers.

I pay about 1600/year for my WRX STI. It's significantly cheaper than the RSX-S that I had. WEIRD.

There is no way the STi is rice. Rice is a Honda Civic with an ill fitting body kit that is just primered and no engine mods what so ever except a huge coffee can exhaust. Oh and don't forget the huge dinner plate tach with a shift light that goes on 2k before it should.

The STi screams boy racer. I'm not saying it's not fast because it is very much so, but they didn't have to give it all those wacky visual effects.

Yea, gold rims scream class. The STI is a badass car though.

Agreed. Although, I do have a pretty built up civic though

That hasn't been my experience. I'm not denying it has some amazing specs for the price, but it's one of the ugliest cars ever made and I see them riced out more often than not.

Sure, the riced out Civic is more common, but the riced out STi is what ever ricer strives for. It's the pinnacle of ricerdom.

Iono, I think the Evo has it beat. Evo -> Sti in ricerness.

Of course, this is in general speaking in wings and body parts and how it looks. We're not taking into effect that it has the speed to back it up and hence would not be considered rice (to a point).

M3 for me was quoted at £5.5k ~ $10k!!!!!!!!!!!! License held for 4.5yrs, 1years no claims bonus...with my parents as main driver and me as a named driver it was still £3.3k ~ $6k :(. Price of an M3 isn't too bad but the insurance was far too much to pay to 'drive' the M3 :(.

Now with the new job so close to home and no car parking it is a waste to get an M3 :(.
