Insurance Company sent a colleciton agency after me?

My sister requested a quote from an insurance broker and for some reason they started a policy with me. I didn't go with that company due to the price and decided to go with another. This was 4 months ago.

Fast forward to today, and a letter was sent to my parent's house from a collection agency. The first company that my sister asked for a quote claimed that they have been covering me and i never paid. I never received any policy card from them to begin with. Something must be screwy with their system.

How bad will this look on my credit report? The most recent score i had was 760.

Contact the insurance company and ask them why a policy was activated on you based on a request for a quote.

Most companies may start something, but then paperwork must be signed for it to stay in effect.
Ask them for copy of the paperwork.

If no paperwork, then TELL them to pull the attack dogs off of you or you will report them to the Department of Insurance for your state.

If there is paperwork, then someone is at fault and it is not the insurance company.

Why did your sister put your name on a insurance quote in the 1st place?

Don't know. She didn't use the right address though, she used my parent's and not mine.

How will having a collection agency contact me effect my credit score? Say in 5 years I want to buy a house, will this hurt me?

This makes no sense. Insurance policies generally have a clause stating that the policy only takes effect upon payment of the premium. Call your State's insurance regulators or your state's consumer protection dept pronto. This sounds like a scam.

that's a good point, there is no way they would cover me if i don't pay them ahead of time. I actually haven't looked at the collection agency's note. I'll ask them to scan it and send it to me so i can take a closer look at it.

Thanks for that.

This is more likely. No insurance company I have ever dealt with will issue you coverage without some form of payment within a reasonable amount of time.

Great, I got a copy of the letter. its from a company called Credit Collection Services.

A quick google searched showed that lots of people have ran into them, and they do not work with people and will ignore your disputes.

I"m hoping this is all a scam and they don't even exist. I'm going to get a credit report next week to see what shows up.

Get your free report, pull Transunion first. Dispute it with TU.

if they dont have your social security #, dont worry about it.

if they do, then yell/kick your sister for using your soc # w/o telling you!

She used the wrong address which could be why you never got an insurance card. Sounds like it's a scam of some kind but should be easy enough to dispute without YOUR signature on the paperwork.

Worst case scenario: Take them to court, say you didn't ever register for this service and that the signature on file is not yours. Then it's up to them to prove that the signature is yours which will be hard to do if you never signed anything. You could sue for court costs and time off work and not really be out any money.
