insurance agent job

this one is for all ATOTers who are insurance agents or used to be or are planning to be or know someone who is, was, or going to be. (how's that for technicality )

is there such a thing as a part-time insurance agent? i've been considering looking into the trade as a part-time / weekend job if it is possible... but from the research i've done, it seems like it's not possible.

It depends on which company you sign with. For example with Farmer's Insurance, you have a six month probation period and they urge you to keep your regular job during this time however after that (if you make your quota) you move up to a full time agent but you honestly only work as much as you want as long as you keep your numbers up. If you decide to be an independent agent and just sell multiple companies products then you could do it part time but the workload would be rough.

Yea I am in the same kinda situation. I am licensed in P&C, but am not ready to quit my paying job to work soley on commissions. I have school loans, etc. From the people I have talked to, it would probably be possible to do it as a part time thing.

i read about Farmer's Insurance's program and i agree with you... it almost seems like you have to work full time. i'll give them a call and find out. i was also thinking of sticking to one company since i can concentrate on knowing their products and services well.

Well I had a job with Erie Insurance, but it kind of fell through. I've talked with people from State Farm and Farmers, but I don't want to be only on commissions. I contacted my instructor from my p&c class who is an agent with American Family. He says there is a program that gives new agents the opportunity with agents who will soon be retiring. It pays a salary of $500 week plus all commissions. Sounded pretty good to me, so I am trying to get in touch with his manager. Hopefully things go well.

My sis works for a State Farm agent. He's the largest in agent in the county. VERY social person, which seems to be the biggest key. He pulls in a coooool 1.4mil a year. Goes golfing 3 days out of the 6 work days.

He started the business when he was 28. He was a multi-millionaire by the time he was 35. He's now 48.

My family had the chance to buy a friend's business...I would've gotten to know the details of the job and then taught them, but in order for me to be an actual agent, there was like a 5-10 year contract. That being said, there wasn't too much to it since we would've had an established client base...but that's pretty unique of a situation.

But I don't think it's something that you'll really be able to pull off "on the side", regardless.
