Insurance, accidents, and rates

So a little over a month ago, I totaled my GTO and have been e-mailing with my insurance agent about it. I asked him about the upcoming rate hike and if me turning 25 would have that magical effect of lowering rates. His reply is below and I found it interesting enough to share with the group:

Unfortunately age no longer is a factor, so turning 25 will have no bearing on the rate. The only factors now are the number of years of driving, which after 3 years everybody pays the same and driving record for tickets and accidents. The points for your accident will stay on for a three year period, starting this October. After 3 years the rates will come back down to what ever the normal rates are at the time.

What many people do not understand about the penalty for the accident is this. Most people are under the assumption that the insurance company gets the money that is being charge because of the points. That is only partially true. It is a state law that we charge the points and increase the premium. The state gets the vast majority of the penalty to put in the high risk pool they designed called the facility. This is similar to an assigned risk pool where high risk drivers are placed. Generally, the high risk drivers could not get coverage from standard companies like State Farm, so the state formed the facility as a source for high risk drivers to get insurance. Because these drivers cause more damage than the money collected in premiums, the state has to get the money from somewhere, so guess who pays. As in most cases in our society, one person is subsidizing another....

The state in question is NC, but I assume this applies elsewhere.

What is it about GTOs and getting totalled? My cousin posts on LS1gto.com and he's always sending me links to pictures of another totalled GTO. (latest one was a guy that had a dump truck change lanes into him and push him down the freeway...) I think they qualify for endangered species status now.

LOL

I worked for an insurance company for a few years, as a computer programmer though so I'm not really an expert. The thing I thought was interesting when I worked there was that the rates for our classic/collector insurance line were pretty low. They say that the reason is that these types of cars are rarely involved in accidents and are often garaged trailer queens.

It was really a sad place to work sometimes. I saw some families there who I would assume lost someone in a traffic accident because they all looked like they had been crying. I hope they at least got some money.

We covered a lot of the "assigned risk" drivers. They're the guys with tons of speeding tickets, DUIs, many accidents, etc. I sat near the call center and could hear some of the conversations. There were a lot of hard luck stories.

I wonder if goats are becoming an endangered species due to high gas prices. There's a lot of insurance fraud out there also. One of the computer systems I worked on was for claims auditing. I'm just going to tell you, don't do it.

Maybe it's just your insurance company and/or the state of NC. I know that when I turned 25 my rates went down and they sent me a check for the difference since my birthday is half-way through my payment schedule.

I for one, would consider a used 2005 / 2006 model GTO to replace my 1999 Grand Prix
later on. Or maybe the G8 when it comes out, if I like how it looks. A friend of mine had
a 2004 that he rolled over. He just bought another used one and is totally hopping up the
motor. New heads, camshaft, dual exhaust, supercharger ... Likes to take it to the dragstrip.

They are the new corvette bought by people that can't have a two seater as a daily driver.

People think owning either makes one a race car driver and sadly learn the hard way that sometimes a Civic Si gets the last laugh.

Also to the OP, it has nothing to do with state or anything else outside the INSURANCE company themselves for determining what they weigh against premiums.

Many insurance companies don't penalize at all for a single DUI either...but some will charge out the roof for one.

I'd call around. I have found the best way to get a better rate on auto insurance is to change companies.

the G8 is quite the looker, and the G8 GT is a steal for what you get compared to just about any other car in its price range.

They're high HP RWD cars that are cheap enough that many of the people who buy them have no experience driving such a car and don't have the respect for it that they should. GTO's are extremely tail happy, especially in cold or wet weather, a small lapse in concentration from the inexperienced drive and they can lose it in a hurry.

As for insurance, it probably varies from one insurer to another and state to state.

400 HP available (used) for under 18k means race-crazy kids will race them and WILL crash them. I was at a car meet last week and who do you think were doing all the burnouts and donuts? GTO's and Camaros, thrown in with some pickup trucks. Insurance rates for cheap V8 cars are insane.

if one is only considering straight line performance in acceleration + some creature comforts.

Well I'm sure if the kids with Civics, etc. had enough power they would be doing burnouts too. Instead they probably just chirped their tires while turning the whole time. It's not even that a lot of people are race-crazy, they're just stupid. With 400 HP it doesn't take much to get in trouble. As for insurance, if you shop around and you can get it cheap even with high HP, depending on your record.

Insurance rates are pretty decent for GTO's. The cars that really get tagged are the rice rockets, Evo's and STi's of the world because they are typically driven by younger people who drive like idiots.
