Insults related question

I read through the FAQ and noticed no rule on insulting other people. I've also noticed that certain people get punished for insulting others while others are allowed to.

Could you please specify what makes it ok for a person to insult others on an open forum? and why that doesn't hold true for everyone?

It's my opinion that if someone that doesn't lend anything to an arguement other than "you're an asshat/peacenik/commie" shouldn't be allowed to post that same comment continuely without consquence. It offers absolutely nothing to the arguement other than immature neffing.

I would like to see a public responce on this as I feel it's an item of importance for the entire community.

Thank you.

Regards, Thera

I can make a list. 90% of the political threads usually end up with some uncalled for remarks.

I posted this as general insight of the Off Topic section, not as a rule against any one person. I'm not out to get anyone. I'm just trying to get the atmosphere raised above the name calling level. I would love to debate and discuss political issues without the general tone being lowered to the lowest common denominator.

I think it's just a hit and miss situation. Different Mods will have different ideas on what is good or bad. I doubt that every Mod looks at every thread so some things are bound to get by. Especially if the offender is an Elite member. IMHO, the best thing to do is PM the Mods when you see something that you feel needs action.

Many meany people do this. I believe there is a line that can not be crossed when making insults. Cross it and you are gone. Don't ask me where that line is though.

I suppose it depends somewhat on whether that particular moderator has had his/her coffee that morning, but that doesn't seem to be a big factor as far as I can tell. However, for some members (a member who comes to mind is a particular Elite who never posts anything useful, but is always insulting people and stuff), there seems to be no line at all. 😕

I saw some pretty harsh personal insults flying in a thread last week and there was no consequence other than the thread being locked.

I can't figure the line out, either. This case wasn't even a political debate, it was just flat out flaming in a nef thread.

Just think, if the moderators started banning nefs again, this problem wouldn't be nearly as bad.

Oh no, I hope this post wouldn't be considered a nef, especially if they decide that they like my idea (as if that would happen 😉). 😱

Aww, come now. Red Dawn is not that bad 😛. He is elite because he was here when the forum was just a regular old bbs; not fusetalk or such. Most of the members form that time period were "promoted" to elite. it has absolutely nothing to do with what/if they contribute. It is now, but it was not then when they were handing them out. Elite members are "hopefuly" the ones who contribute most to the forums, or at one time did.

Oh, so that explains it. Elite apparently then can be kind of like a "beyond lifer" status symbol for some if they were around early enough. Or it can actually mean something useful. I learn something interesting every day. 🙂

From what I understand, yes. The Mods bestow elite on members they like, contribute tot he forums, or who send in the bribe money. There is no real definitive way to become elite. It doesn't exactly mean much. Same as postcount names such as lifer, diamond member, etc. They just mean that person posted a ton. not that the posts were useful.

Some members totaly deserve the elite status. some do not. I have only seen one elite lose the status, and that perosn totaly deserved losing it.

From my understanding people become Elite because they find favor with the Admin for whatever reason. It's that hard and that simple 🙂

I'm not concerned with ones status. I'm concerned with ones behavior. Some of the junior members have been just as bad as some of the older people.

There's been a very noticeable decline in the quality of discussion in the last year. I'm not sure if that's because of war jitters or Admin neglect. People actually start new threads with the sole purpose to flame/nef/insult, for example the "bad parents = liberal peacenik" crap. It's just dumb and it seems to be increasing.

I have no problem discussing an issue with someone from the other side but this place sometimes looks like the Rush Limbaugh fan club, full of bitter, hateful, uninspired, political sheep. I'm fully aware that this stuff can spew from either side of the political spectrum, which it sometimes does. I just wish the buzz word partisan crap of the morning talkshow circuit didn't permeate this forum as much.

a member who comes to mind is a particular Elite who never posts anything useful, but is always insulting people and stuff Obviously you don't read many of the political threads. Granted I don't post anything useful in the YAGT and such but hell, the nature of those Nef and Teenage angst threads aren't meaningful to begin with.

Anyway, Evadmans right, I was made an Elite because I've been around before the begining of time and way before people started whining about Elites being mean.
