I just got a new nec 3520a drive and I was wondering if it would be worth it to flash the drive to the latest firmware, and if so how I would go about doing it. I got binflash and the current settings are:

Firmware v1.04
GUI Interface v1.10
Drive Interface v1.00
NEC Interface v1.10
NEC Internal v1.10
Using Ricoh bitsetting commands

Sorry if this has been discussed, couldn't find an answer after searching.

That is, I believe a NEC DVD drive. Flashing DVD drives is sometimes risky. If it does everything you need it to do without any problems, my advice is, - don't flash it.

Yes it is a nec dvd-rw drive. If it is not worth the risk then I will not flash the drive. However, will I be able to burn dual-layer disks with the current firmware?

Maybe not - but I have yet to see any dual layer blanks on anyone's shelves. :)

Doesn't NEC's website have instructions for flashing - if that becomes necessary?

I see there there is a guidance sheet for the 3500A - the process should be the same as for yours.

Yeah the cost of dual layer media is too high to risk flashing the drive then. Thanks for the help corkyg.

If I may revive this thread, does anyone know if they have even released new firmware for the 3520? The NEC website only has firmware (2.x) for the 3500. Does the 3500 firmware work on the 3520?

It is my understanding that the 3520 will not support DVD-R DL until the firmware is upgraded.

It will burn DVD+R dual layer though. I woulnd't update the firware unless you want to make the drive region free.
