You can pick up any number of decent DTS/Dolby 5.1 receivers for around $300Canadian.
Technics, JVC and Pioneer all have brands that are within this price range at electronics stores, Future Shop, etc.
I have a JVC receiver, with 5x100w output, and I think it's awesome. A way better choice than any computer speaker system there is. If you pair it up with the right speakers, no matter what any Klipsch diehard fan tells you, nothing can beat a real home theatre system.
I personally went with a home theatre set from Sony, it was last years model and sold for around $400 after I bought all the wiring (heavy duty gauge)... Save315 was the model number, but these might be tough to find. Expect to drop anywhere from $300-$15,000 on home theatre speakers. You can easily get 5.1 x 100w 's for around $400 though.
So all tolled, with a 5 disc CD carousel (technics), I spent about $900CDN... This is about $350 more than a Klipsch 5.1 system, and allows for 3 digital inputs, 8 analog inputs, composite video passthrough x 2, radio tuner, 5 disc carousel, 100w speakers, etc. etc.
I'm really happy with my decision not to go with computer speakers, especially since I watch so many DVD's, and I was looking for a new home stereo anyway.
However, for the budget conscious, this might not be a safe alternative
