Imagine your heart being like that without you even having the slightest idea. Does it make you at least want to go for a comprehensive cardiovascular examination? I'm increasingly hearing about young people dying from heart attacks nowadays. Maybe the human species will be the first to go extinct from over-eating. :Q

Are you concerned about heart disease at all?

I have this vague idea that one day I'll eventually eat right all the time. I accept it even though I don't really believe it will happen. So no, I don't worry about it.

Yes, it is one of the leading causes of death in the US (coronary heart disease). My take on it: avoid it completely be avoiding refined carbs and high amounts of bad fats (deep frying, etc.), and exercising. Doing cardio is a miracle for your heart.

If you already have clogged arteries and stuff, can you naturally completely unclog them by switching to a healthy lifestyle? I've seen clogged arteries before being dissected in the cutting room of a hospital, and I gotta say, the plaque is HARD. When you cut through it with a scalpel you hear a distinct crunch as it cuts through. Not too sure how that stuff can simply dissolve away by leading a more healthy life.

I have a family history of heart disease, so yes, I'm concerned. I'm in better shape than previous victims in my family, but still...

That's quite a team you play on. Can the point guard tackle the shortstop?

I eat poorly as I love my chips and chocolate but I hope that 3.5 hours of karate a week and 3 hours of recumbent exerciser helps.

My family has a pretty bad history of heart disease so if I had to guess, I will probably have issues, but hopefully science will have a better solution to it by then.

I've always wondered the same thing. Anyone know this?

There is some initial research that shows Lipitor or Zocor, one of those drugs could in combo with a healthy lifestyle start to reduce the amount of plaque on artery walls.

And yea I'll back it up that plaque is hard, when assisting on central lines or artierial line placements I've seen the plaque dull/bend the bevel point on the needle...fairly gross!

Not really, but I did plan on getting a checkup when I got back to America (I'm finishing my summer stay in Switzerland in 2 weeks)

I think cardio helps a little. This does too.

Yes. Consume a LOT of polyunsaturated fats and foods high in HDL cholesterols. Also eat a lot of foods that encourage a lower PH - this will help scrub calcification.

Eat fish from cold water climates, use olive/canola/flaxseed oil for cooking, eat raw fruits and vegetables.

Try to keep saturated fats (animal fats, coconut oil) as low as possible.

don't eat too much i.e. keep calories in lower or equal to calories out.

A glass of red wine here and there won't hurt either.
