Something I do every time I'm on my PC is have GMail open in one browser tab (Firefox), web surf in others, and have the external AIM application up. Can the iPad replicate this functionality? I currently have an iPhone 4 and I know I can have AIM, GChat, and Safari all running in the background, but I HATE having to double-tap the home button, select the right app, wait for it to switch, respond to an IM, double-tap home again, select Safari again, wait for it to load, etc. etc.
I'm willing to run web applications of them all on a potential iPad, but is there anything that makes this type of experience as seamless as it is on a physical computer? That is, is there a browser out there that has instant or near-instant tab switching without refresh?
