InstantIdler for AIM FTW

Go idle in a snap - without being idle...

Yes - I am a bastard for doing that to my friends

Example 1: Girl I'm dating, I probably wouldn't just get up and disappear for a few minutes.

Example 2: One of my buddies, Don't care and they probably won't either. Although I'll probably say brb.

If she's put you on hold that long she's not 'your girl' and you're wasting your time.

Am I supposed to give the person I am talking to my entire attention, or can I be vague and respond occasionally, when I remember to? Is it considered rude to do that? Is it ok to have a conversation, or several conversations, sort of chugging along in the background?

The simple answer is it all depends on the level that you know the person involved and how serious the conversation is. If you're just BS'ing about nothing it's one thing but if you're in a serious conversation about something important where you're both responding immediately to each other to just stop is rude IMO. Common sense.

A fascinating piece of history

If it's some hot girl, I'll say BRB.

If it's someone I don't give a fvck about I'll just ALT+TAB back into my game. I remember this hot girl I used to talk to... I would alt tab every round that I died in CS to respond to IMs.
