Instant coffee has gotten really good.

I got a gift basket and it had a small jar of Nescafe instant coffee. I always brew my own but I decided to make some instant since its been many years since I had a cup. I was pretty surprised. It tasted pretty darn good.

funny, i was going to post the same in the $400-espresso-machine thread.

(i'm italian, we hold coffee just slightly above jesus in our religion)
i also drink nothing but instant these days. compared to how easy it is to make it, the loss of flavour is irrelevant.

Sure i love a nice Turkish cup, but it's just so slow and messy, it's become a thing of the past.

While I understand the big difference in coffee, I'm all about cheap instant. We share a big jug in my office which ends up being a few bucks each every few weeks.

I'm also hooked on the Starbucks brand Via ready brew iced coffee. I buy them off Ebid cheap and make one every morning.

I've just invested in a 0,5L french press, because I got tired of instant.

Oh yeah, they're coming up with some pretty awesome instant coffees. I remember when they used to taste like chalk to me. They have some pretty awesome international house cappuccinos now too.

It's decent. It's no brewed coffee, but not terrible like it used to be.

brewed coffee tastes terrible... when you throw it in a cup and pour hot water on it.

Nescafe Taster's Choice is the best instant.
Good enough when I don't have time or access to grinder and french press.
It's inexpensive, too.

Still not good enough. Regular coffee is as easy to make for me as instant. I don't see any reason to go with the lesser type.

I miss in Italy where there was a 2-3 cafes on every corner and an espresso for 60 cents.

I make my own with a Vietnamese dripper now. Its easy, tastes as good as an espresso, and is cheap.

You might not have a reason, but at work it's annoying make my own coffee except by using the coffee maker - which is crap and isn't cleaned regularly enough. Otherwise I have to go out to buy coffee, which is fine but takes 10 minutes and the nearest coffee place open past midnight is Dunkin' Donuts, which takes 20 minutes round trip.

I could bring in my own grinder and french press, which I've done before, but it's simply not as convenient as instant. Procedure for instant: add spoon of coffee to cup, add hot water from hot water tap on the water cooler. Stir. Done. That's 15 seconds and zero cleanup.

I make plenty of coffee via french press at home, just not at work.

I suppose there are always extenuating circumstances, but we use a clean, professional quality bunn coffeemaker. Since I always need more than one cup, and our coffeemaker makes coffee about as fast as you can pour water through it; I can't see the advantage of going instant. I totally see where you're coming from here though.

Instant is still pretty horrible. A French press leaves the grounds steeping too long. A regular coffee maker is OK. Siphon is good but too messy and time consuming. That leaves pour-over FTW.

You control steep time with a French press.

Which is one of the reason I don't like machines for coffee or tea. I'd much rather have an electric kettle to get exact water temp if needed and control steep time myself.

I got this instant coffee in a small jar at K-mart for $1 and I absolutely love it. I like it a lot better than most every other place that sells coffee or even made in diner's and such.
I'm not a coffee nut basket though like some are so whatever. I keep it simple and avoid the steeping with French presses and other such crap.

You can't really control steep time with a French press. That's why all the 4th wave coffee places use pour-overs.
